Today we decided to stay at Kandalama until noon so that we could all enjoy the lovely amenities of the resort. Paige, Daphne, and Annie took the opportunity to have one more dip in their infinity pool (and get in some sychro swimming practice). Patricia, Sarah, and Tracey H indulged themselves at the onsite spa. While the other troop members enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and ...

Cheeky Snorkel and getting back to Homestay

A travel blog entry by beckeyjw

So this morning, Lauren and managed to get a free hire of the snorkel equipment from the guys running the diving centre right near our hostel, we just went from the beach outside but the water wasn't as clear as over at Pigeon island. We basically went to the rocks and back, as they had said there may be turtles, unfortunately we didn't see any but saw a few more fish. We were also swimming in much deeper water this time, so although I'm a fairly strong swimmer ...

We got on the bus at 6.30 which was really lucky as it meant we all got a seat and could stow our bags away. The bus journeys aren't the most comfortable and really not helped by having two and a half on a seat that in Britain is designed for 1.5 people. I had a ...

... the major train lines here. 3rd will get you wooden seat, only if the train isn't crowded. Second will get you a comfortable reserved seat. First will get you a reclining seat and A/C. A first class ticket into Kandy was 1200 rupees (5). Next time I'll travel second or even third. I spent the first 2.5 hours of my journey standing in the doorway of train carriage. You can hang out the carriage and watch the world go by. The train track leads through the mountains and ...
