Day 171 - 18 August - A look around Orkney
... the same time as the henge. Also nearby is another stone circle called the Ring of Brodgar which we went to next.
We went for a lap around one of the lochs and back to Kirkwall along the south coast of the middle part of the mainland. Got a nice view of Hoy and some other nice scenery along the way then back to the hostel where we booked a tour of a 5000 year old burial mound for the next day and spent an evening in front of the tv and chatting with other guests.

Day 170 - 17 August - Shetland to Orkney

Got to Lerwick and went to the terminal to make enquiries for the ferry to Kirkwall in Orkney and found the next ferry left in only one and a half hours so we got tickets and got in the queue. Being the first off meant we had to wait and be the last on.
An uneventful 5 hours or so later and we were disembarking in Kirkwall where we made our way to the Youth Hostel we had booked earlier. Tucked into bed safe and sound by midnight.

... was a complete recreation of one of the houses, which gave an excellent sense of what it was like to live in one. It is believed there are many more buried villages but there is no intention to excavate them. The Ring of Brodgar is a huge stone circle, similar to stonehenge dating back 5000 years. One Man's POW is Another Man's Interior Decorator
... The fact that they had to use found materials to create this beautiful edifice is a testament to their artistry.
When I left the chapel, the rain was subsiding, so i got some pictures of the statue as well, which was also created with found materials. Right after I got my pictures I went to the fence to pet a cow. Right beside her another cow defecated all over her lounging friend. Good thing that rain started up again.
