Ha Long Bay and Hoi an

Hey peeps!

We're in Hoi An now and we absolutely love it! It's brilliant here, its the complete opposite of Hanoi, its a quiet peaceful old town (has a lovely beach, but we havent been there yet) thats been classified as a world heritage site so driving is banned in the old city (city center) which is great. The hotel we're staying in is lovely and the best part is they have free bikes so we've been cycling in and out of town every day!

Hoi An has completely changed our minds a...

Tailors and the unravelling of my willpower...

Soooo we flew into Danang and I have got to admit I'm a huge cheerleader for flying (although I will grudgingly admit it is not really part of the 'backpacker experience'). But when you're trying to fit 3 countries in in 4 weeks, you have to compromise, and I'm willing to give up long, uncomfortable bus/train rides! The hardest part of travelling is often the transit between airport/station and accomodation (when you have have limited sense of direction in a new place and no reservations anyw...

Shopping, drinking and the King Kong bar

So we arrived Hoi An to yet more flooding! This **** weather is due to the Typhoon in the South China Sea (Its meant to be the bloody dry season!!). Hoi An is a historic merchant town and was once one of the busiest trading posts of South East Asia. However as I discovered on our orientation tour of the town - the trading element was thoroughly alive and kicking and was going to do some serous damage to our carefully considered budget. It is a long time since Bev has passed stall after stall,...

Wickid!

We arrived in Hoi An after the short, but exhilarating mototaxi journey from Da Nang. The guys helped us find a hotel and we chilled out with them with a beer before checking in.

That evening we took a stroll around, had dinner at a little bar/restaurant opposite our hotel (Son something or other), which was right on the river and then an early night - ready for the next day!!!!

We were up quite early and took some bicycles down town to the Tailors for Dave to have a very swish ...

... BIA HOI, which closed at 11, along with everything else. Fortunately, there was a young motorbike cabbie who liked talking to people "from all the world". He encouraged us to hop on and we went to the local beach about 3 km with a bottle of rum or two that cost 2$. There we chatted it up about Vietnam and Canada etc and how his father lost a leg in the war and younger sister and brother both drowned. The ...

We had by this stage worked up a substantial appetite (and sweat) and so fell into the first restaurant we found and devoured something - I can’t exactly remember what. Miriam had duck actually which she decided after it was all gone that we really should have tried some as it was the best thing ever. But we were left wondering and ...

... Consulate for Lifestart to get a grant from their Direct Aid Program, up to $US8,000. These processes, which he is learning about all the time, are very interesting. We wanted to direct the money to some full education scholarships, which Lifestart has been beginning to offer to clever children, but from poor backgrounds that would prevent them achieving their potential. These scholarships would take them from Grade 6 through to the end of Year 12. Some have already ...
