Kamphaeng Phet: The Farang Experience

I spend just under 2 days in Kampaeng Phet, but I could write about it for pages and pages! It's a small town about halfway between Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai. I decided I didn't want to miss the whole middle of Thailand, even though no one really goes there, and decided to stop in Kampaeng Phet to break up the journey. Now I knew it wasn't a tourist town, but I didn't expect to be one of 4 tourists in town! So this was my first taste of really truly feeling like a "farang ...

Can't say it, but it's spelled "Kamphaeng Phet"

Okay. So we've changed plans. No more Laos in the schedule, as we'd be losing too much time trying to get across the border from Chang Mai to Luang Prabang (although there's an interesting but untested new border crossing in Nan Province, which I'll have to investigate for the future). Now we'll head back south again and then to the east to Angkor Wat in Cambodia (again!) and some quality beach time on Ko ...

Bettwanzen!! / Bedbugs!!

... definitely the way forward. After we got to Phitsanulok we were supposed to be picked up and taken straight to out guesthouse in Old Town Sukothai, but there was no sign of anyone (again). So we jumped on a tuk-tuk to the coach station and jumped on some sweaty bus to take us to Sukothai (an hour trip). Just as we were about to leave a flusted Thai bloke jumped on and shouted "Mr Hampden, Mr Hampden", and told me and Ross to get off the bus. He ...

Slowing down in Kampheng Phet

... to an ancient town, but this one is practically right on top of it. As a result, the main ruins, while impresively preserved, don't have quite the same mystery as a few other I've seen. However, I rode north from there to the arunyik (forest) temples, which were built by monks as a place for quiet meditation. These were much more secluded and lots of fun to explore on bike and foot. I half expected at times to look up and see a monkey climbing on ...

... by songthaew and brought to the school which is out of town. Now I know what it must feel like to be processed into prison. As soon as I got off the van I was guided into the school, and then literally held by my hand and led into a room where I signed my name, was given a name label and was then ushered into the office to pay. Then out again, given a basket of clothes and told to change. Clothing has to be polite, no short sleeves ...

Bicycle, Bicycle, I Want To Ride My Bicycle

... The Lonely Planet has failed us a lot in Thailand. By then it was 12:30. Our option was to try to find a place to stay for 5 hours or to hang out in the bus station. We went for option B. It was a long, hot, uncomfortable night, but we got on the first bus out the next morning and arrived in Sukhothai early in the afternoon. Sukhothai was the first capital of Thailand and is interesting because the ancient city is full ...

Visit to Kamphaeng Phet

... not out and about on official activities) he teaches everyday at a school near the palace. Kamphaeng Phet. A little while ago, I went to Kamphaeng Phet (actually a smaller town, near to KP) to visit my friend John and talk about possible work. I had a very good time and want to mention a little bit about what we did to show how nice Thailand is. One afternoon we went to a shop down the street to buy some chicken. Just for a snack. The shop that sells the chicken ...

Thailand continued

It's quite amazing to be sitting here this friday evening, in our guest house in Kanchanaburi, right on the Kwai River. The sun is setting, turning everything around a purple green color, and the evening breeze we've waited for all day is beginning... It's been difficult to find both the time and energy to sit down and write, for every day changes contantly. On a trip like this it seems every change, every moment, every experience, is ...
