... not adhering to the reboarding times, we commenced our 2 hour drive back to Zurich along Lake Walen, at the foot of the Churfirsten mountain range. Although late, Marcello requested the driver to make an unplanned 5 minute stop so we could see and photograph Lake Walen's beautiful scenery. Yet again, the same people were late reboarding the bus. As we pulled in to Zurich city, Marcello gave us his parting joke, well actually more like imparting his wisdom and bid us ...

      1740. Goodbye Austria

Day 285 6 hrs, 16.6 kms The valley gradually narrows into a gorge, and I leave the grassy fields behind. Luckily there's a trail through the forest along the rushing turbulent river. It's a popular area for camping--there's a fun looking (but unfortunately locked) rope/cable bridge across the river and an "Indian Camp" a cluster of teepees I guess for young folks to have a Native American style camping experience (this is Austria, right?). And then ...

Day 285 5 hrs, 5 kms In Pfunds I make a discovery that is both sad and happy: it turns out that these guesthouses are a lot cheaper than I'd thought. It's happy because that means that I don't have to camp all the time--but it's sad because I wish I had figured this out sooner--maybe I woud've picked guesthouse over camping the last couple of nights! I decide to do ...

1738. The Sprint to the Hostel Town

Day 284 4 hrs, 12.5 kms Day Totals: 16 hrs, 37.5 kms In the town of Pfunds up ahead there's supposed to be a hostel and I'm determined to get there tonight. But I still can't pass up the chance to do a quick parkbench concert in the riverside town of Tosens as I pass through. I then find a quiet country path on the other side of the stream and continue my sprint to ...

Day 284 2 hrs 5 kms I follow the trail which cuts through a cow pasture, where a portly bovine dares stands in my way a la Lord of the Rings :"You shall not pass!" Finally I climbed up the sloped to get around her. Down at the bottom is a reservoir and the valley floor widens a little. For this next stretch I actually feel hot for the first time in who knows how long. Looks like it might ...
