... was so warm and welcoming to us wet guests and allowed us to park the bikes under her sheltered porch and sit there with her and the three children playing there. Soon a neighbour of her's joined as well to escape the rain from his motorbike. She brought our chairs from her living room for us to sit on. ... car send up clouds of fine dust like talcum powder. It's a constant battle - it coats the floor and furniture and I'm sure triggers my frequent sneezing fits. Leave a book on the table overnight, pick it up in the morning and it leaves a neat rectangle-shaped pattern. I'm up as early as possible to sweep the courtyard, then it's inside and sweep and mop the floors. ... into the city for the occasion. Cafes and stalls sell traditional vegetarian dishes, crowds line the streets to watch the passing parade and some even follow along on their bikes. The weather has been particularly hot for a few weeks, and we've tended to hide indoors during the day, so it was nice to be out in the cool of the evening and enjoy the celebrations. It was all very colourful, noisy, chaotic - the photos don't do it justice.

... work. It's been great to have them visit, but said visits have indeed seemed vexed. If I were the superstitious type I would say perhaps we're jinxed.

Even the first delightful visit by family last year turned out to be during the hottest, most humid time of year. We did anticipate it to some extent and we did plan for it by including a boat trip on Halong Bay and a stay at a Hoi An beach resort, but it was worse than expected and was too hot ...
