... and seats. There were no seats available at the station as there was no waiting area and the cafe was full of people already waiting to find out if their trains would run. Once it was announced that the would be no trains our tour leader joined the ticket queue to obtain tickets for the first Shinkansen out tomorrow morning. He was successful. It will leave at 6:08am, so a very early start. He had already contacted explore! the tour operator to let them know that we might need a ...

Leaving our bags at the hotel we took taxis to the railway station for the shinkansen, or bullet train. We were surprised to see that it was snowing as we hadn't expected snow as far south as Kyoto. Heading from Tokyo to Nagano, the scenery gradually got hillier and hillier, and appeared to get much colder outside. Before too long the cityscapes of Tokyo and Nagoya changed into vistas of snow covered villages in rural towns who's names I can't remember, or in some cases even pronounce.

With the snow falling outside, and the Shinkansen's climate control turned ...
