Home again

We flew out today to go home through Toronto to Ottawa. We were delayed in leaving Vancouver and had a very short turn around time in Toronto, but did make the flight and surprisingly enough so did our regular bags. However, the skis did not make it. They were delivered the next day. It was a lovely weekend, but the time was all too short.

On our way

We left home bright and early (well actually dark and early) to get to the Ottawa airport for our 7 AM flight to Vancouver. We flew via Toronto and landed without issue in Vancouver and our luggage all arrived as well. This was a relief as the last time we flew to Vancouver on a direct flight from Ottawa our luggage didn't make it. We got our rental car and drove to ...

Just as dry sleeping in the lake.

... the exercise) One of the more interesting things we discovered was that the windows leak. This we discovered in the middle of the night at Davis lock when the thunderstorm hit. Jump-up and move out of the wet spot. All in all we should have slept outside.

Departed early in the morning for Chaffy's Lock and onwards. We even managed to get out before the foghorn guy arrived for work and without hitting anything.

... some up from the bottom of the hill in sleds. It was a team effort. We even used the sleds as shovels sometimes. 3. "Porcupine" the mound Now, you have to break up a bunch of sticks and make them all the same length (approximately 12 inches long). Then stick them into your mound of snow so that you don't dig too far when you are digging out the inside. It will look like a porcupine when you are done, the sticks will be all OVER the snow mound. 3. Let it sit! Wait ...

Off to Perth we go.

... bundle up our gear on the sleds we have brought. Erin can't pull one because she has to carry a giant backpack, so I offer to pull the extra one. We attach it to the back of my sled and then go off into the night. The air is crisp and chilly and the stars are absolutely brilliant. I can't see anything in the pitch dark except the headlamps of the others, but every time I snap a picture, we are illuminated for a second, so I take quite a few. Our ...

Going East to Westport

Senica and I went for along and scenic drive through rural roads to Westport. We saw lots of lakes and stopped for dinner in the small tourist town of Westport where the Big Rideau Lake meets Wolf Lake. We climbed Foley's mountain after dinner and had a nice lookout over the town. Then we meandered through the quiet streets before driving home.

East to Westport

Senica and I took a long drive today. It was lovely to explore the area. We were definitly travelling on the scenic route. I have never seen Wolfe Lake before, nor driven all the way around Devil Lake. We had a lovely dinner for two at a Greek Restaurant in Wesport.

... Zealand bill with a bunch of other Canadian change - luckily he though it was funny and thought the bill looked "neat" - but I quickly paid him in Cdn $ ! Have started sorting through the pictures - surprised I did manage to take about 350 "stills" between our little digital camera and the new cam corder and looking like about 7 hr. of video which I'm sure will need lots of editting. Sarah must've ...

Our last leg of the journey - home at last!

... how "quiet" the place was - they were actually painting lines on the crosswalk at the "drop-off" area - a place usually crazy during the day! Bill decided to go get the van at Park 'n Fly loaded and bring it back to the "drop-off" spot we use so often when I'm picking up Bill - as at this hour they aren't doing much to keep cars moving! Sarah's flight surprisingly got in a few minutes earlier then scheduled and luckily so did her ...

... drink now), "Urquebaugh"/"V.V.O. Candian Scotch", and "Potteen". This product of human skill and sweet Tay River water was eventually banned along with all other alcohol during the Temperance movement (I believe around 1916). It seems a shame but considering two of the last three distilleries in Canada to shut down were in Perth, I don't think they went without a fight. There are an unusal ...
