This place was originally built in the late 1700s by Cardinal Durini as a weekend get away and as such has several secret hidden staircases from his bedroom to others........... It was all magnificent, the buildings, the extensive collections of furniture and artifacts and the gardens with the views over Lake Como.

... the guide provides commentary in Italian for 10 minutes then the condensed English version for 5 minutes. It was very enjoyable none the less. My compensation was having a couple of cold beers sitting out on the balcony watching the world go by and contemplating where we would eat tonight. My feet were saying, why not try the restaurant in the hotel and so we did, not the greatest meal in the world but the view and the atmosphere was unbeatable.

We were ready, but the Swiss weren't! The most memorable part of the journey was not the beautiful scenery, the picture postcard lakeside villages, the mountains, or the waterfalls. Instead, it was the 2 hour queue waiting to get through the 17km Gotthard-Strassentunnel on the A2. That meant our planned stop in Lucerne was abandoned, and we got to Strasbourg at about 9pm. We walked back to the hotel and got the rain gear out, fuelled up and departed , ximo heading to Firenze to catch a ferry and me the opposite direction to Milano about 200 plus kilometres of autobahn.
