After checking out of Hotel Campiello in Venice, we weren't sure where to catch our bus for Villach, Austria – somewhere at the train station according to our tickets – so we checked out right after breakfast and caught the waterbus for Santa Lucia station in order to get there at least an hour early. The Mins didn’t get to …
Our next trip is to the resort town of Bled in northern Slovenia, at the foot of the Julian Alps. The town of Bled is set around beautiful Lake Bled, which is overlooked by Bled Castle set on a sheer cliff high above the lake. Our first day we walk several kilometres to Vintgar Gorges, passing by quiet little villages set among apple and pear …
... a beer). We tried a local drink called Bamboo, which is red wine mixed with Coke. As unusual and gross as that may sound, it was delicious; Fanta with red wine was another good mix. Once we had tried all the local drinks, we made our way to a more lively pub. It was so crowded that there were women pushing me out of their way, and Slovenian men grabbing my jacket and whispering in my ear what sounded like threats. It was an interesting experience to say the least. Deb and ...
... some forest, old man-made dams and the foreshore we arrived at the half way point. Ben and Caroline were tired and decided to catch a bus home, while the rest of us continued around the lake. We stopped at a hotel/bar/restaurant not long after and had a shot of schnapps to warm us up and continued our trek. Mel and Daniel walked ahead as Jermaine and I tried (unsuccessfully) to catch some trout illegally with a piece of fishing wire that Jermaine had in his "survival kit". ...
... did we know the following day would be rained out, not a very pleasant thought going across to the Island in the rain. That morning Gillian also slipped of the steps of the Mobile home hurting her back to what extent we weren't sure. Fortunately it wasn't as bad as could have been and she was able with great care and at a slow pace walk around the island. We decided that before we left (on the following day) to ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Penzion Mayer Bled
I stayed at Penzion Mayer for two nights, but could have easily stayed longer. It is in a gogeous location - very peaceful. Breakfast outside each morning was an absolute delight. (it was lovely weather, but there was the option of eating in the dining room if preferred). The room was very spacious and airy, with a small balcony. The bathroom was quite large. Everything was very clean. Oh, and added bonus - BBC world was a informative change from the normal cable tv available at hotels.
Better than Home Away from Home!
Charming place to stay! Wonderful food and pleasant, personal but not obtrusive service - makes one feel your arrival has been anticipated. Our departure was very early in the AM but we were treated to personal sacks of delicious thick sandwiches, fruits and beverage to acomodate us on our journey - a very thoughful touch!
We have just returned from a two night stay at Pension Meyer, the Manager was very helpful and went out of his way to recommend what we should do. The room was huge compared to stardard hotels in Slovenia and there was a nice balcany and it was spoteless clean. Highly recommended. The restaraunt in the Hotel is excellent as well.
Wonderful hotel, warm, clean, welcoming. Manager very helpful, and his wife also very friendly- have booked again
Best place ever!!
This place was the most beautiful and best places I have ever stayed at! The manager was brilliant - we wanted to go to Vintgar Gorge and order a taxi - he offered to drive us himself as he was going that way. Everyone was friendly, the breakfast was supurb. Our room was large with a balcony and a view over the lake. The price was also excellant. I would recommend that anybody stay here - you won't be dissapointed.
The place to stay in Bled
We have just spent the Christmas long weekend here and had a wonderful stay. The place has so much character, is clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. AND the restaurant is just great....we had an amazing Christmas eve dinner here! I'd definitely stay here again.
Stayed with husband and toddler - no probs in getting a travel cot put in room which was big enough to accommodate it. Clean rooms, good location (10 mins walk to lake and town), great restaurant - big advantage was we could put the child alarm on and go down for a lovely dinner. Breakfast was good too. All in all - a fraction of the price of equivalent hotels.
