The mining magnate Thurzo family, who took charge in the mid 16th century, were responsible for a great deal of rebuilding work, although its present form was not finalized until 1611. It burned down again in 1800, after which the Pálffys occupied the castle. And then, after a period of dilapidation and WWII the castle became a national monument.

From there we were back onto the bus and back on our way to Poland.

... tried the kolonial hotel, but it was full. They pointed me to a pension though, which pointed me to another one, which thankfully had a room for me. I had a pork / mushroom crepe for dinner, and then took a shower and washed all my stuff, using one of the ortliebs as a washing machine drum (thanks for the tip Pauline, works wonders). ... Sweet, that works well. Making it to the campsite was a bit long, but thanks to my headlamp and my map I didn't get lost, only to find the campsite reception closed (at 9pm). I entered anyways, and set up my tent, cooked Thai rice in the dark, and took a shower. There's only a handful of people staying here, there's a river nearby, the showers are very... basic, but it will do nicely. I wonder if I'll sleep in Poland ...

... long before that. It was added to many times from the 15th century to the 18th. Sadly it was badly damaged in a fire in 1800 that apparently burned for 14 days. It was again restored into what we see today.



Entry to the castle and St Martin's Chapel inside the walls costs €6 (but only €3.50 for the old git). ...

We set off by other means and head towards the Polish border to the north. A lovely sweeping well-surfaced road winds up through the villages, over a small pass and down to the river that marks the crossing point.
