... one of them and carried out his duty faithfully (case in point: In WWI, Romania was on the side of the France and UK, fought against Germany and Austria). It didn’t happen only in some out-of-the-way, minor nations in the backwater; Britain’s current royal family was actually transplanted from Germany in the 19th century, and kept its German name until WWI, when the British developed hatred toward the Germans.
I think that’s why I am so addicted ...
The night at the Bucharest train was uneventful.I tried to sleep but i was waken up twice by the passport police, one of them which asked me my marital status and got surprised when i said i was single.Lone female travellers seem to be quite rare in Eastern Europe. Locals wonder why a girl would do such thing like travelling without her man or without her parents if she is young.I question the contrary. Why would a girl travel with her boyfriend,be stuck with his grumpiness ...
Brasov, Transylvania, Romania heyitsmechloe... coming from Turkey. No, he said, he is really from Turkey. Like, he is Turkish. A German-Turk at that. Instant bonding. Natasha and I invited him and the guy sitting on the staircase to go out into the city with us. The latter was a French guy from a village with 3,000 inhabitants. In June and July, the 19-year-old Romain saved up money from giving guided tours in a medieval castle just a mile from his house. In August ...

Brasov, Romania gazalache... more the problem. We went out to karaoke another night, there were a couple of romanian guys who got up and sung New York, New York in a thick accent. It sounded terrible but I'm sure it was still better than the version by Richard, Claire, Mark and I on our NY rooftop at 6am in the morning after a big night out. ;-) I spent Saturday afternoon with Krista playing pool and chatting. She's really a great person. I love meeting and getting to know all these people as they ...
Brasov, Romania dicooper10... moving on to Sfântu Gheorghe in the afternoon, from where there were more frequent, direct connections back to Miercurea Ciuc. Perhaps an ambitious plan for a single daytrip minus private transport, but it looked feasible from what I could tell. Going on what the tourist office in Miercurea Ciuc had told me, getting from Târgu Secuiesc to Sfântu Gheorghe should be a cinch. Well, I was a little surprised upon my arrival to find Târgu Secuiesc's bus station looking like an ...
Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy), Romania xerius... for lunch and then we went on a walking tour of Brasov. We saw the main square, rope street (The narrowest street in Europe) and then walked by the weavers bastilllion and up to the cable car to go to the top of the hill. At the top of the hill Brasov was written out like the Hollywood sign. On the way up, the guide mentioned he paraglides and has friends that do ...
Brasov, Transylvania, Romania lindsaym... gave off a hot pinkish/reddish tinge. So I tried not to look, reassuring myself that L'Oreal had a very large Professional Hair Care business, and that they really were color experts, and surely this whole thing was going to turn out great, just like the color on the box. And guess what?? It did! The grays are gone, and well, my hair did take on a much more blonde color, but what the hell. It looks pretty normal, I think... but the lighting is bad in here, and I don't have the best ...
Brasov, Romania globedecker... en route to Giugiu at the border between Romania and Bulgaria. (50mins at this border and then 1 hour on the Bulgarian side in Ruse) Buying the train tickets in Bucuresti for Bulgaria, the Romanian ticket agent kindly told us that she had 'fixed' it on the tickets so that the Bulgarian conductors could not ask us for more money as they tended to do with tourists. ????? Hungarians told us to watch the Romanian officials...what will the ...
Bran, Romania mchupe_travels... to our destination. I use the term 'walking' loosely. If the definition of this action is "putting one foot after the other following a 30 second delay," then ok, that's what we were doing! :) After a few blocks, the whole thing was becoming quite comical to us. We still had no idea where we were taking this woman, and when we asked her where she lived, she pointed behind us. Uh-huh. Right. We asked everyone we passed if they spoke English - we were looking for a translator! There ...
