16 hours Down Under

Due to the flight schedules, we had a 16 hours layover in Sydney on our way back to Shanghai. Right after we arrived, we quickly went though the formalities and took the City Rail to CBD area. Coming over from New Zealand, it took some adjusting to see all these people when we exited the train station. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and it was just in time for Happy Hour. I have to say that the Aussie really know how to live. It was not even 4PM and the bars are already packed and spilled o...

Lye Family Holiday - Australia - 2008

Starting with a 5 night stay in Melbourne, we managed to cover most of the city itself, St Kilda's and some of the suburbs. Shopping was more fun than I remembered as the DFO was just a short walk away from our hotel And the eating was equally good (from Indian to Chinese, Italian to Australian), the food was always good. Queen Victoria Market is a must visit place, and the freshly made dips and pastries are simply to die for. Le Bon Cafe at St Kilda's and the fish and chips shop further down...

And so it begins - Seeya later Hamilton Island..

Firstly, I should also explain the term "Slappers" just in case anyone gets the wrong idea. In our meaning it is a term of endearment between the 3 of us which describes our mischievious at times behaviour and our sense of fun and having a great time.... Slappers #1 and #2 (that's Kel & Trace) embarked on their trip from their hometown of Hamilton Island. From the moment the hosts on the plane were serving we celebrated the start of our trip with copious amounts of champagne before touchi...

sex in the city girls depart

Yesterday we all parted ways again, heidi and Kristen headed towards melbourne, i left for sydney via brisbane and addy was off to discover fraser island. We had such a great time together as always and it was so nice to have a holiday and spend so much time together compared to the limited time we had when we were working in africa. The highlights of the trip was seeing nina and darren in melbourne, the laid back lifestyle in byron bay, discovering the real australia in rockhamption the beef...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Pensione Sydney

Friendly and central

from A TripAdvisor Member
A quiet, clean and friendly location in the city centre.A retreat from the hectic George St.

Loved the Pensione Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was very impressed with the Pension Hotel. Its location is very close to Darlingharbour and a short bus ride or 15 min walk to The Rocks and Circular Quay.

Very good value for money and is clean and safe. Would reccomend for people travelling on a budget but who still want a bit of style and funk in their holiday.

I especially liked the communial area where one can smoke and you meet like minded people. The layout of furntiure and the communial kitchen was very trendy.

Bathrooms are small but the trendy style of mosaics made up for it.

More Hostel than hotel

from Nic78London
We were looking forward to our stay, having read about this new hotel, however we were dissapointed upon arrival - the rooms are tiny and there is nowhere to put your clothes or your suitcase. We were in a double room that you could just about swing a cat in, but not much else. In contrast, the bathroom was quite big. We also had to share our room with an unwanted, but very fast cockroach!

We did ask if it was possible to move to a room with a wardrobe, but the only rooms available were next to a busy and noisy main road and they still weren't much bigger.

The whole place is more of a hostel than a hotel, and is very basic. There are good hostel-type communal facilities i.e. lounge, kitchen area, laundry, but it certainly doesn't meet my expectations of a hotel - there are no reception staff at night, there is no cooked food/coffee available at all.

It is in a good location, close to Darling Harbour and it is cheap, but just be aware of what to expect so that you're not dissapointed.

Not too bad but....

We stayed at the Pensione Hotel for 6 nights. The manager and his wife were great but found the girls on front desk did not seem so interested in helping and we felt we were "annoying them".

The room faced George St and was very noisy at all hours and the hair dryer provided did not work.

We rang front desk and were told we would be given a replacement dryer. When this did not happen after a day we were then told it would be repaired the following day, nothing was done at all so we bought a hairdryer ourselves.

The room was serviced everyday, (sheets not changed at all during the stay) and the cleaning staff forgot to provide towels, bathmat, soap and toilet paper three times. We asked once for these items but ended up taking them from the cleaning trollies ourselves after that!! We requested a late check out but this was not recorded as the front desk forgot to do so.

The communal area was good with internet, laundry and cooking area.

Although these problems may seem trivial to some, we were paying for a service we were not receiving. We have chosen to pay a little extra and stay elsewhere next time.

Disappointing

Having read the reviews of the Hotel prior to leaving, I was looking forward to my Sydney experience safe in the knowledge that the hotel would be a fine base.

Upon arrival we were pointed in the direction of our room. Through a maze of corridors, came our ''Double Room''

This was by no means as described, it had barely enough room to walk around the 3/4 size bed, with no Wardrobe and a tiny Bathroom, it was not 3.5 Star quality!

It took a call back to the Tour Operator back in th UK to enforce a satisfactory room was provided.

Following this we had amicable service which could not be faulted, but be cautious!

One Of The Best

My Husband i decided to get away from Melbourne and spend a week in Sydney .We booked in at the Pensione Hotel and i don't think that i have stayed in a more friendly and an immaculate kept hotel in a very long time. The manager Rodney and his wife Amanda were a delight to deal with, and always willing to make your stay more enjoyable.

The guest lounge is an nice place to sit and have a drink and also speak to other guest as they do there cooking or sit on the internet. And the new shops below are a good place to shop.

I am a very happy customer and will recommend the Pensione to all of my friends, and the price is good for the product that you get

Highly recommended - I've stayed twice!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at this hotel on two seperate occasions. My first stay was when the hotel first opened and my second stay just recently. Whilst my first stay was good, my second stay was even better. Their guest lounge is now completed and the shopping arcade has opened too. The price of this hotel does not reflect its class - you get much more!!!! Great value and in my opinion the standard expected from any 4 star hotel, luxury budget is how it is marketed but i'd use the word Luxury!! Very comfy beds which are needed after a long day of sight seeing in Sydney and lovely new bathrooms. I'll certainly recommend my friends and family and im sure the staff there will make them as welcome as they made me.

Good for the price

from A TripAdvisor Member
At a budget price, this new hotel is really good as it offers clean and comfortable accommodation. Its location is also central. However, the reviewer who wrote in October 2004 has not been honest - although a guest lounge with kitchen facilities as well as laundry facilities were advertised in the hotel brochure, as of November 2004 (the period in which I stayed and I stayed for a few days), these were not yet ready. I asked reception and was told that the hotel had only been opened for a few weeks and so none of these were ready, neither any internet kiosks as advertised. Furthermore, the reviewer from October 2004 states that there are trendy boutique shops below - again, these were still being constructed and there was construction going on all the time I was there. Being in a central location, the hotel is near to many shops nearby however.

The main thing that marred my stay in the hotel was the noise from the snooker club (which went on until 2 to 3 a.m) in the next building. The management did take action to remedy this and it got better.

The staff and managers of the hotel are very helpful and friendly. The hotel is definitely recommended, especially at the price, and will probably be better once the facilities are in place.

Great comfort and value!

I stayed at the Pensione the first day it opened! The owners were EXTREMELY accommodating and friendly, the location was convenient to Darling Harbour, and the place was immaculate. I've stayed at many, many places that cost much more and aren't half as nice. I'd definitely stay there again!

Luxury budget hotel in the heart of sydney

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Pensione is a brilliant new hotel located in the heart of Sydney's vibrant entertainment and theatre district. It is literally on the doorstep of all of Sydney's finest tourist attractions.I booked the Pensione because of the low prices compared to other hotels in Sydney but didnt know that I would be living in the most luxurious budget hotel in Sydney, stunning ensuites,air-con(which is needed)cable tv,telepone, proper hotel beds, tea and coffee and fantastic service from the management team.

I ended up staying there for three weeks, there is also a lovely guest lounge with kitchen facilities and a guest laundry and a beautifully refurbished bar, cafe and an arcade of very trendy boutiques on the ground floor. Highly reccommeded.
