Today we awoke to a great breakfast in the hotel, complete with eggs and bacon which we were not expecting. Shortly afterwards, we boarded the bus for Rothenburg. On the way there, we were debriefed on all of the optional excursions of which we decided to do most of them to enhance this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After a few hours on the bus, we arrived ...

    Bayreuth to Lichtenfels (0 + 12km light) - Day 24

... to get on and off with loaded bikes as there were 4 steep steps, a narrow doorway and a 20cm gap between the carriage and the platform. Our embarcation was not helped by five obstreperous German males unloading their bikes and luggage onto the platform in front of the door in a disorganized muddle. However a nice DB lady kept the door open until we were onboad safely. With the rackpacks off Syd managed to wrestle the bikes onto the train - we took all ...

When we check the weather later we found out that the temperature had maxed at 32 ...

... served ended his tour of duty in the 1920! Along our tour, we learned how Rothenburg thrived as the crossroad of the East-West and North routes of trade. During our stroll, we also "went to hell" (it’s a bar!) and learned about a young Assistant Secretary of Defense, John McCloy, who had a painting of Rothenburg in his home. After heavy bombing by the allies in late March 1945 when nearly 45% of the wall was destroyed, ...

... however the check-in process was effected regardless.

We had emailed a few days earlier asking about parking for the bikes but received no reply, however gesticulations indicated that we could leave the bikes outside the elevators chained to a ring embedded in the wall at head height. The luggage was unloaded into the elevator and moved piecewise to the room (it is amazing how many items we have when thay are unloaded from the ...
