... Finally about 200m later we entered a large cavern called Globočak Collapse Doline that was surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites sticking down the from the roof and up from the ground. It was an amazing sight. Everything was damp, dripping with water and the temperature was a comfortable 20 degrees. The cavern was beautifully lit up by atmospheric lights all around as the guide gave us a talk on how the caves were formed. We slowly moved off ...

Tuesday we woke to rain and apprehension re our drive through the Julian Alps. However by the time we reached hair pin bend #17 ( out of 50 total) and the Russian church the blue sky began to appear. We continued to climb to the summit 1600 m Vrsic Pass - snow everywhere which of course tested our drivers but they passed with flying ( well almost) colours!

Via train, I am headed to the Venezia Maestre train station where I will catch a bus to Ljubljana. There are no train connections from Italy across the Slovenian border so there are few options for this journey. I found online that this 25 euro direct bus is the simplest solution.
