Ode to Louis

... festival was taking place. They had far crazier uniforms than the gauntlets and plumes we endured. The bands were great though, even the younger kids sounded professional.

We ended up being "done" way earlier than the meet up time. Jon found us Kaktus popsicles, covered in pop rocks, not bad. Good day for exploring. We're probably ready to brave the autobahn and drive next time, for the few hours range that is.

Hills and horses

... hand at an ariel assault course....he came back a shell of his former self after 3 hours in the trees hanging from bits of wire and trying to keep up with 9 year old girls who were more agile than him..for my penance I had to play pitch and putt with Lauren using carved putters and wooden balls..no danger i'll be joining a golf tour anytime soon.

Definitely worth a visit in winter for you keen boarders out there.

Crystal cave

... well as a crystal on display that is larger than my head. The exhibits in each room vary considerably. In this case I think the pictures describe the museum much better than I can. Once at the end of the museum rooms, the visitor must pass through the showroom and store before leaving the facility. Mom and I had a lot of fun in the store and the men waited patiently for us to decide on ...

A brief visit to Kufstein

... little more than one street. The castle looming above is well-preserved and evocative, and really worth a visit. There's a panoramic glass lift to get you up there if you're too idle to walk. The prison tower holds historical exhibitions and details of the erstwhile prisoners and ancient torture methods, including a shocking engraving showing some poor unfortunate being tied ...

Big climbs in the Wilderkaiser

... legs began to whimper and ask whether it wasn't time to gently ride back to base for a nice, cold beer. However, they quickly came to their senses and marshalled themselves for the coming onslaught: a long, hard fire road climb up 9 long switchbacks. Bigger than anything in South East England, for sure. The reward was worth it: a long singletrack descent with lots to offer in ...

Rainy Salzburg

... the hotel wouldn't be able to give us a lift into town. Okay, we thought, but would we be able to book the glacier trip? I resolved there and then to find our own way into town. How hard could it be?

Anyway, they taxied us out to our hotel after dropping the Kitzbuehel contingent as our hotel was out by the lake. First impressions - very beautiful setting and they gave us a room with an enormous balcony - even though we hadn't paid extra for ...

Lenggries

... and a half tour. We were in a group with about 40 Americans on a tour. The guide was very good, and the castle was magnificent. Much nicer and more opulent than Versailles. Never finished and hardly lived in, but just amazingly over the top. Grabbed a lovely sache torte from the cafe. Ignored the horse and carriages, and walked back down the mountain, and caught the bus back to Fussen.

Back to our hostel to pick up the gear, then lunch at Nordsee say before catching the ...

Bad Aibling

... the inspiration for the Disneyland castle). It's very pretty on the outside because of it's setting, but mostly unfinished on the inside. The owner of the castle was King Ludwig II, who also owned 3 other castles in the area. I would suggest to visit another one of his castles instead. If you're in Munich visit castle Nympenburg or if ...

Kitzbühel

... paintings, the artwork are incredible! On our approach to the church, along one side, was a small cemetery with decorated graves (just like the one in the Sound of Music). When we turned the corner and saw more graves winding around the church and up the hills, it was absolutely awesome. Graveyards here in Europe (at least judging by this one) are very different from those in the USA. Since there is much less space to devote to the dead, each family has a ...
