The taxi fare to the train station from Casa Albert (the end of the pedestrian walkway) cost 8 lei, not the 25 we were charged on our way in. In US dollars, that meant we paid about 2 v.s. 6, even getting ripped off, it is pretty cheap to take a taxi. When we left Bucharest, our train arrived at the station early so we were able to get in early and relax before departing. Not so here. We arrived early to sit on a bench on the platform. In a short while we were joined by ...

Humanist Johannes Honterus, whose 101-year-old statue can be seen next to the tower, became Stadtpfarrer (priest) a few years after bringing Lutheranism to Brasov in 1542. Listen to the impressive 4000-pipe organ dating from 1839 during the concerts held at least once a week. Best of all however are the 119 fabulous Anatolian carpets on display. The rugs were donated by ...

Our first journey outside the capital saw us head out to the world-famous Transylvanian mountains. Although we were later to realise that it's a relatively expensive form of transport, Sarah was happy to indulge me in my love of trains. So we arrived mid-afternoon after a pleasant journey in one of those old-fashioned trains where the carriages are split into compartments for six people with the isle running down one side. Ooo, ...
