    We left the hostel at 9:30am to go on a tour of all the main sights in Transylvania. Our first stop was Peles Palace, former home of the Romanian royal family.     ... when it was in the shadow of a haunted house, and countless tacky touristy stalls. The worst part of it all is the fact that Bran Castle doesn't even really have a connection with Vlad Tepes - the only possible link is that he may have spent a few nights in the castle at one point.

    But don't let that stop the massive tourist machine from continuing to push the hype, using it to extract every possible dollar out of the thousands of people ...

    As unforgettable as Peles Castle was, we actually came to Sinaia for a different reason - to do a bit of hiking in the mountains of Romania, and to briefly escape the country's stifling heat. Sinaia itself isn't that great, a very expensive tourist town, that is a bit reminiscent of Banff, in all the wrong ways. However, its cable car up to the mountains is super convenient for hikers, and was one of the draws for staying here.

    I found a my way to Brasov, which is home to a beautifully restored old Baroque town around a center square. It lies at the foot of Mount Tampa, where a Hollywood-style BRASOV sign reminds us all where we are.

    A taxi driver tried to charge me 10 euro for the 10 lei trip. No way, man! That's a difference of $10. I angered the driver by getting out and heading for the 4 lei bus. I got off at the central park where - I kid you not - dozens of wedding parties were posing for ...
