Best laid plans. Cory got out of the shower last night and decided to catch a couple of winks. We didn't wake up until around 11 pm. By that time the entire town was shut down. It is a small town and it is the off season. We decided to catch up on our sleep. Of course we woke very early in the morning. We had told Lettie that we would be down for breakfast around 8 but it was much earlier than that. We decided to watch the sun rise from Burg Stahleck. We made the climb to the top of the mount...
Cologne, Germany coryandlauraGot up and packed quickly as we had an 8 am train to catch to Koln. We want to stop there quickly to see the cathedral and then continue on to Bacharach. We got to Koln and checked our bags in a really neat high tech security locker. We stepped out of the train station and were immediately overshadowed by the huge Dom. It was massive! We went inside and climbed the bell tower (500 stairs). Koln is a relatively new city (95% of the city was destroyed by WW11) so the views from up top wasn't as...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany kateb75We got up early and had a decent breakfast at the hotel. Lettie is a good host and tries very hard to please the guests. There are 2 other couples down in the breakfast room. We took the train to Moselkern so we can see Burg Eltz. I have seen pictures of this castle and I am willing to travel out of my way to see it. I love all the castle/medieval stuff and this is the castle that I have thought about since I was a kid. By train, you get off in Moselkern and hike about an hour through the woo...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany kateb75Hi everyone: Sadly we bid farewell to Murren, Switzerland and so far our favorite stop along our journey. After one last yummy Hotel Alpenruh breakfast gazing over the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau one last time, we dragged our extra heavy baggage up main street to the train station headed for Grutschalp. We will miss the symphony of transportation, all in sync with each other as the Swiss don't miss a beat and on-time trains rock! This place truly runs like a Swiss clock and we know we will long...
Bacharach, Germany rlineurope... it was about 25 degrees up there and brutal.

We left the park around 3pm; we had planned to go biking on this trip, but the icy weather put the kibosh on that. (in fact, this is the first day I'm warm- I bought a long-sleeved shirt so now I am not a frozen Jonesicle anymore.) So we headed to wine country early. Now, our guidebook saId that "zimmer frei rooms for rent abound, so you don't need reservations for a hotel." So at 5pm ...
Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany sql_spice... 8217;s dinner and I enjoyed every course. Dessert was the traditional Baked Alaska with a flaming procession by all the kitchen staff. It took almost three hours to finish dinner so it was almost bedtime by then.
I stayed up, though, and watched the ship pull in to Cologne. Very pretty sight. St. Martin’s church and the Cologne Cathedral were illuminated and stood out against the dark sky.

Did I mention the cab was a brand new Mercedes?
At any rate, we got to our wonderful Castle and were hoping for no rain the next day so we could take a boat trip... no such luck. The rain has returned on our trip. Instead, we took the train up to Koblenz. The entire river is littered with castles. Most have them have been converted into hotels it seems. And the towns along the ...

Bingen am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany woodsfamily... to make 4 different transfers in order to get up to the Rhine Valley, and my next one was in the town of Wurzburg. So when we were almost there I heard an announcement in German that I assumed was next stop Wurzburg (because I heard blah blah blah "Wurzburg" blah blah blah). So I got ready to get off the train, and we quickly stopped at a small station. I saw a sign outside the window that said Wurzburg Hbf (abbrev. for Hauptbahnhof, or central station), so I got off ...
