... presentations, not for sleeping). What struck us was the amount of work and craftsmanship from an age where tools were hand, not power, and time was not of the essence, but more something required to bring about a good result. Again, we were looking at furnishings and buildings and walking passageways that had been in place before Australia had been visited by Captain Cook.

In the Palace shop we found the famous Mozart chocolates, called Mozartklugen, which Nel had ...

The start of the 24 hour journey to Sofia

... 1.50 euro in total and there is no way you would even get one ice lolly for that in the east.

Our bags are stashed with food and drink along with every possible variety of wet wipe available on the UK market! Our emergency ration is one block of Orkney fudge that did not quite survive the heat and subsequently got squashed, hence it did not become a gift at the office in ...

Easter, Midterms, etc.

It's been a busy couple of weeks here in Vienna. After my last update, we visited the United Nations offices in Vienna, which is about 3 blocks from where we live. We had a little tour and then a talk by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The talk was by a PR person, so our teacher was really ****** and rescheduled it for this coming week. She prefers we actually learn stuff, which I appreciate. Especially b/c they ...

Imperial and Animals!

... it was still very cultural and awe inspiring! Empress Elizabeth (otherwise known as Sisi, for reasons as yet unknown to me) was incredibly beautiful, as I think I mentioned earlier there was a particular painting of her that I still do want to see, and just seeing her paintings made me all 'ahh, wow' and googly-eyed. But learning a bit more about her, I don't like her so much - her husband Franz seemed pretty cool, and his mother Maria Therese (who ...

Night time in Vienna

... a magnificent view of the city. A good walk around the amusement park and we find it's time to start heading back or we may miss the last train. It so happens that we get the wrong train anyway and end up miles from where we were heading. So we miss the last train back to the hotel and end up catching a taxi that cost us about 40 euro. Not a good way to finish the evening but it was a greay day overall.

Vienna

... by an Austrian guy who worked at the hostel, a Norwegian who did a pilgrimmage from Switzerland to Italy, and a quiet Belgian guy. We had great conversations well into the night, the cheap beer helped! The next day we visited some museums in the Hofburg palace. They had an enormous collection of silverware used over the centuries (enthralling !), as well as the Sissi apartments and parts of the palace were open. Couldn't imagine trying to heat such ...

Tour 6050 / 0924 Day 3

... at least an hour. Talking of trucks - there are just so many over here. One queue was counted at 45 before we gave up as it went for as far as one could see. We finally got to Vienna at 12.30pm and it was still raining. Jackie, Judy, Ivan and I went and had lunch and then we went our own ways. We were free for 3 hours and decided to go to the Schonbrunn Palace and Gardens in Schonbrunn. This was about 10 minutes on the ...

A brief visit to Vienna

... name a few. Never mind that the city is home to Vienna Boys Choir. Now there were no concerts of particular interest to us on during the time we were there, and unfortunately you can only hear the Vienna Boys Choir on Sundays, so we decided that to fulfill our culture criteria we would go and see the Lipizzaner horses. Nathan here: The Spanish Riding School of Vienna is the oldest surviving institution of its kind in the world. Its purpose, which has remained ...

Moving on...

... sleeping on one little bed. The saying used to go ' the only way out is through those chimneys'. Make you ythink how good you have got it, lets say there was a sigh of releif when we left.... Next stop was Mondsee - the land from the sound of music. When you got off the bus you felt like you were walking into a postcard!!Absolutely spectacular.Left aligned photo tag: We drive through Salisbury [where Arnie Schwarzenegger used to live] into Germany.
