On our first night, they took us out to fondue and wine, which is their staple here. The cheese fondue was intense - very sharp, but a fun experience and then we devoured a bunch of meat fondue! Also, a lot of people speak ...

... view of the water. Hard to beat!

The entrance to the small harbour is framed by a six metre high Bavarian lion commemorating the harbour's completion in 1856 and a new lighthouse on the other side. From the top of the lighthouse we had a good view over the little island with the well preserved old town and numerous buildings from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Main Street of the town contains houses decorated with frescoes, timber framed ...

... some will come to a complete stop. On driver slowed down and swerved left, right, left right, not knowing what to do--even though I was a good 3 meters off the road! I guess it relates to the culture of everybody following a strict code of rules. So when someone is doing something against the rules (like a pedestrian walking in a place that's meant for cars) people get really ...

      Day 282
      4 hrs, 10 kms

The scenery so far in Austria has been nice, but not spectacular (here I go, comparing it to Switzerland again!) But my next town more than makes up for it. Auberbraz is halfway up up grassy hillside, and above it is not one, but two magnificent waterfalls, tumbling over the rocky precipice.

Time to do a little side trip. It woudn't be right to just snap a picture and move on... I'm going to climb up to the base of one of those waterfall.
