... Mont Blanc which I believe is about 4,800 metres. The town of Chamonix is at the base of it and is a major ski village in winter, and a base for hikers, mountain bikers and tourists in summer. We got there late one afternoon and planned the next day for me to go up the Auguille du Midi cable car to see Mont Blanc up close and for Phillip to go for a ride up some of the smaller peaks in the area. ... roads made for driving before we hit..Germany. And the world slowed down. Autobahn? Don't make me laugh. Every time we hit a German motorway we slowed to a virtual halt. I was looking forward to driving at 120mph but never got past 90mph and then only for a couple of minutes. We'd hit no traffic at all until we hit Germany. We had our own party at the beast and took advantage of the fact that we had no neighbours and turned the music ...

... and enjoyed them with our lunch by the lake.

Everywhere we go the gardens are alive with springtime colour and I am still enjoying the wonderful roses, peonies, and huge cultivated poppies, not to mention the poppies that grow wild in the fields. On the island we passed the best poppy field yet - it was just so thick and colourful with red and pink poppies. Even all the public areas like bridges and ferry stops have planter boxes overflowing with colourful flowers. ...

... Museum. This was a big museum dedicated to the great airships of the 1930s. Fascinating! I hadn't realized that these dirigibles made regularly-scheduled trips between Germany and Brazil in the 1930s! The exhibits were great - they displayed lots of memorabilia from the airships, and gave you a feel for what the cabins looked like through actual size mock-ups. You got a great sense of what it was like to "cruise" from Europe to the ...
