... it's more interesting than the motorway. Our first port of call, excuse the pun! Was palm fronted Kavala, it has a hill top castle, an aqueduct dated 1530 and a colourful Panagia old quarter.
The aqueduct is very impressive built in a curve with large arches supporting smaller arches which in turn supports the water channel. The water comes from springs 6.5 kilometres away and was stored in the cistern in the ...

The drive up was very picturesque, the road surrounded with ancient olive groves, the trunks of the trees are twisted and knarled, there are also rows of bee hives painted in bright colours. The sun is still shining so we sat out for a while, ...

... a very steep track to find it, but couldn't, as we walked back down a man who followed us down the track, tookus to the rocks carved with pictures, they weren't too impressive but the man was kind to take us and as usual not a word was understood by either party.
We drove back to Xanthi and then on to the Nestos Delta, stopping along the way to top up the Internet package. We had a late lunch on the beach and then drove into the delta. We found the ...

... on the beaches at night and drank too much retsina one night and missed going out to the island Thassos which is just off the coast from here because we weren't feeling too good in the morning!

There is a well preserved acqueduct in the town and a huge city wall and fort on top of the hill, overlooking the port and fishing boats. Again there are lots of cafés and delicious cake shops!
