      We departed Rome on time at 7.50am and had a pleasant rail trip to Venice Mestre station where we changed to a coach for the trip to Villach. Train got up to 250kph in places and there were lots of tunnels. The Coach was very comfortable and the scenery very interesting as we left the plain behind and headed into the mountains.       ... and just 6 miles or so from Italy, we stopped at a great stone fort that was used by the Italians in the 15th century to fight the Ottoman invasion, and then ironically by the Austrians to repel the Italians in the 1st World War. Sheer drop on one side, sheer cliff on the other with ladder rungs affixed to the cliff face (see photo) that allowed soldiers to quickly get to the mountain top, a very dramatic site, full of history.
