A STORY OF LOVES

... of all time. The main exhibit hall, painted ocean blue and laid out with ornate mosaic tile work and crystal chandeliers, was truly old school. Not only featuring living aquatic animals, but an amazing perspective into the history of aquatic exploration...before there was a conservation orientation. When courageous teams of men from around the world competed to reach Antarctica first, to build the first functional submarine, to design the first scuba suit....when squid and ...

White Hill towns and Tarifa

... be a mosque in every way. However, it is called the Santa Maria Synagogue. Huh? It turns out that it was built as a Jewish house of worship, by a Moorish Mosque builder. Then it was taken over by Catholics, who added the Santa Maria part.

From there we headed toward Tarifa. We stopped at a few more of these Hill Towns. The kids got tired of the concept and decided to stay in the camper playing ...

Costa del Golf

After the strange showers at Cordoba I was keen to try out the facilities, so I trotted over to the toilet block on our first evening. At least they weren't push-button, although they were just as idiosyncratic in their way. It took about 5 minutes before the water ran hot, and the flow was so feeble that "trickle" would be a more accurate word than "shower". At least I didn't end up with the entire cubicle and ...

Not crossed the Straits yet!

... t the Pot Police so went ahead anyway. We toyed with the idea of getting the bus to Algeciras today, that way we could avoid the cycle tomorrow and get the ferry from Tarifa. All well and good until we discovered there are no buses from here to Tarifa (9kms) we could have cycled it but there where would we have left the bikes. It was all too hard, so tomorrow we cycle to Algeciras, check for mail and catch a ferry to Tangiers. No matter how experienced a traveller ...

Going to Africa for Lunch

... to Chabad Lubavitch Judaism. At that moment, another person who clearly worked at the home came out screaming at Muhammad in Arabic, at which point Muhammad turned to me: "David, the head of the Jewish community is on the phone, and he wants to speak to you. He is not happy." How did I get dragged into this! It turns out that the first old man, who had greeted us, was just an elderly resident with a mild case of dementia, who had no authority to let us ...

American Autonomy in Morrocco

... gentleman in a flamboyant royal-blue suit. I realize the sign-holders are the drivers, but I'm more inclined to walk up to the guy in the suit. He introduces himself as Nezha's husband, Abdul, and says she isn't available, but will take us on the tour. Good enough. I feel bad that the other guide did send someone but since he's not personally standing there...maybe a lesson in customer service. We jump in a large mini-bus and Abdul tells us he ...

Rock the Kasbah!

... worked but never spit out money we finally hit the jackpot and were able to do some shopping in the medina's marketplace. As the sun went down that evening the whole medina became alive. The energy was infectious and we practiced our bargaining/haggling skills at the numerous stalls. The next day we arose with the intention of finding the Kasbah (old citadel and/or fortress). After "getting lost" and walking in circles (which we realized once we ...

Our first taste of Morocco

... I think that's just a natural defense in the cities. There is a lot of illiteracy (40 percent) and unemployment (20 percent) so a lot of people tend to just hang around offering to guide you some where or sell you hash or just flat out ask for money. We haven't had any trouble, but they do get very annoying when they follow you for blocks harassing you. I didn't really think that the fact that Muslims don't drink would stop bars or the sale of alcohol, but it ...

... it´s cool to just say, "oh ya, that´s another continent over there". The ferry was late leaving and we got to Morocco around 1pm Europe time and were worried we´d only have a few hours there (4pm return) but found out Morocco is 2 hours behind. The people got split up based on what language they spoke (the organization was a bit chaotic) then we went for a walking tour through Medina and Kasba. I kept singing "rock the casbah", but the spelling is different so I don´t ...
