Breakfast in the hotel which was an odd mix of Japanese with some western options. You can hear gunshots all the time, as we are in an orchard area they use it to frighten the birds so they won't ruin the fruit. The apples are HUGE and delicious. They is also lots of persimmons and enormous, very expensive grapes. The grapes are covered in plastic bags on the vine to keep them free of imperfections. The rice is being harvested and there ...

We had no idea of what was happening, but it was a lovely drive first past apple and grape orchards and then on very narrow steep roads to the ski fields including Nozowan. Woke early and caught a taxi to Ueno station. JR Shinkansen to Nagano, then electric train on the Nagano dentetsuline to Yudanaka. Walked up to our accomodation - Shimaya. Mr Yumoto is very helpful. Because the day was so nice, we chose an alternate route out of the park in order to visit the little onsen (hot springs) town, We hiked back down the mountain, through the park forest, along the river. It felt so restorative to spend so much time in the woods -- what a treat for these two PNW peeps!
