Left charming Coimbra and headed north. Got awfully muddled on the motorway around Porto but finally made it and headed in to the airport to see if we could change cars for one with a better gear box. But after a long search we gave up and took the N13 north to finally arrive in Viano do Costello and found our beautiful pousada on top of the hill looking over the sea and the town far below. Flower carpets in A Guarda

Today, for the celebration of Corpus Christi, the people of A Guarda create stunning flower carpets on many of their streets. This morning, at 1 am, preparations were on their way, laying stencils with the designs, drawing the guidelines, and laying the flower materials that become the carpet. In total we walked about 10 km. In A Guarda we meandered through the smallest of streets, home mostly to fishermen and sailors. Had lunch at the Celtic, and then walked to the Castelo de Santa ...

Went into the Castillo de Guimaraes (X century) and the Pazo dos Duques de Braganza,(XV century). Had a lovely lunch in some restaurant found in the old city center. Then we decided to drive back into Caminha to watch Portugal's first game (against Alemania). ...

A Guarda y Camposancos

Today we drove along the coast into the town of A Guarda and the even smaller village of Camposancos, where my Dad was born, and where we'll stay for the duration of our trip. This, to me, is the center of it all, the origin, and the reason why I am here. This is home. The Monte Santa Tegra lies between both places. A Guarda faces the Atlantic, and Camposancos faces the Mino River. Across the river is Caminha, Portugal. Oh, what a ...
