ONLY IN JAPAN

Landing at Tokyo-Narita I was first off the aircraft (benefit of sitting in Row 1) only to be greeted by an ANA employee holding a sign with my name on it. Not good. The first hiccup in my trip: NO BAGGAGE. How efficient was ANA in handling this? Not only did they know that my bag wasn't on the plane, they already had my "lost luggage" form filled out for me. In addition, they gave me ¥10,000 (about $100) in cash on the spot. My bag was still in San Francisco and would arrive the next day on ...

Night out in Ginza

After returning from Hiroshima my luggage arrived from San Francisco. Clean underwear and a shaver! To celebrate (ha!), I went to Alain Ducasse's restaurant, Beige, for dinner. The restaurant is on the top floor of the Chanel building smack dab in the center of Ginza with amazing views. Again, I was the only gaijin in sight at the restaurant. But, that garnered me lots of attention from the matre 'd and the executive chef as they were gaijin too. I had a four course meal: cauliflower veloute...

There was an inmistakeable Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Sean Connery, and Johnny Depp. Sean was also quite pleased that there were smaller versions of Michael Jackson from the Thriller music video. But it was all really expensive and so we were forced to leave empty-handed.

We finally did find Don Quijote, by the way, and it was quite by accident. There isn`t too much to say about it. Day 23 - Inclement Weather??? WHERE???

... per night, we simply couldn't justify it. Were it to be a single night, we would probably have been able to justify it, but we were scheduled to stay in Hakone for 3 nights.Yes the Ryokan would have been nice, but I guess we just aren't $420 per night kind of people. We did the investigations, and found that Hakone is a 35 minute train ride from where we are now, so we decided to book the hotel we are in ...

... it. I'm staying at a crazy hostel. It's in the basement of an apartment building. It's comprised essentially of three rooms: a male dorm, a female dorm, and a small, 10 foot by 10 foot kitchen/library/computer room/dining room. There are beds for about 20 people and it was pretty much full each of the 4 nights I stayed there. There's one shower in a closet in the corner of the multipurpose room which means that as you sit and chat with others or eat ...

Neviem, ci je to kvoli tomu, ze nechcu obtazovat, v kazdom pripade som pocul, ze gaijini im dost divne smrdia. Nech je ako chce, som rad, ze mozem dychat. ... ever-sharp" pencil to space age solar cells. The real treat for me was the section with the modern stuff. Among the many inventions we saw were a 3D television, space age solar cells, a screen that showed a different picture depending on where you stood, and how a liquid crystal TV works. The neatest invention to me though was the microwave type devise that used super heated steam to cook vegetables and meat. Lasting about an hour, it wasn't long before we were back in a taxi ...

Harijuku Girls (and boys)

Today we had another early morning train ride back to Tokyo for two days off! I don't know if anyone else has done an average of my weekly work schedule... but it's about 4 shows a week! Did I mention that I LOVE it here?!? Joanne, Amy and I went to the trendy area of Harijuku (Made kinda famous in the US because of Gwen Stefani). It's the shopping area for all those Japanese hipsters. We found some cool thrift stores too, where I picked up 2 new vintage t-shirts. We also ...

... of Liam Gallager. And the girls... well long dyed hair, fake tans and copious amounts of make up seems to be the look. Most of the restaurants were full or too small to accommodate 5 of us but we finally found a Japanese "tapas" place with a waiter that spoke enough English so that we didn't end up ketchup spaghetti. And of course giant beers were had by all. I leave tomorrow for Thailand. Japan has been fun, but I am to head to the next place. .

... back to Mrs. Shibata picking me up in the family car. The drive from Senri to the Shibata home place was about 15 minutes. When I arrived there, Taku and his sister Takako greeted me. We visited and talked about Knoxville and how life was in a typical East Tennessee home. I also told them about what I did in Knoxville. The one thing that they were most interested in was how much space Knoxville had. To show them how much space we had, I made ...
