LEMON TREE PASSAGE, PORT STEPHENS/HOME

... we didn't see any. Apparently there are so many here that during the mating season, which coincides with the height of the tourist season, they can become a problem and a lot are injured on the roads.

We took a drive to Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay and couldn't believe the changes since we were last here - but dare I say it - it must have been at least 30 odd years ago. Belinda was only a baby ...

... God for here! When we arrived at Soldiers Point, we found out that the campsite we wanted to stay at had no tent sites... so we went to the next one but the facilities weren't great... so as it was our last night we decided to push the boat out and stopped in a fab cabin (with sat TV and DVD player!!!) for the night. And boy we were glad.... We dumped our stuff and went to explore Nelson Bay where we had lunch. We then ...

... the period of 1805 - 1820, convict blacksmiths, coopers and carpenters operated a lumber yard and manufactured tools and other articles. On the way out of the city we passed the huge coal refinery, still a major business in Newcastle. Graham drove out to Port Stephens, a beautiful natural harbor that covers an area more than four times that of Sydney Harbor, where we went on a dolphin-watching cruise. The water was a bit choppy, and after about ...

Charlotte and Tom - Nelson Bay

Hey hey! Amazing, I'de managed to move my sleeping pattern forward by 12 hours with barely any of the usual jet lag effects :-) That meant for a nice active Thursday... Charlotte and I left No. 31, Alton Road [the most famous house in Raymond Terrace!] in good time for the bus to Nelson Bay, but due to unforseen circumstances [further than we thought, lol] we missed the only bus of the day! After much eager interogation ...

Spot X Surf Camp

... girl! Both us us loved the surfing although our bodies weren't too happy about it. Julesy had grazes all over her knees and I had chaffed nipples:) That night we all hung out on the beach and played a few games and chatted to all the dudes. Gotta surf again!

... impressive speeds, only just remembering to close my mouth as sand pierced my skin like pins. At the foot of the slope we all bobbled and then were thrown off the board by our own momentum and landed head first in the sand. Getting back to the top was a mammoth task, muscles burned and lungs collapsed. Once back up however we could fly again. The evening came and Helen did a fabulous job on the BBQ and i experienced my first birthday in a hot climate.

... where you will get stuck!!! Typically I managed to break something - going over one of the drops I cracked the exhaust....but handy man Simon soon fixed it! The fresh water lakes are the main reason to traverse the middle of the island - wow, what amazing turquoise colours. Stunning. But you have to time your drive right to avoid the 4WD buses that bring in all the gap year students (yup, I must be getting old!). Another thing worth avoiding is the planes on the beach - yup, they ...

Food Purism

... one to generation to another. Zia Terry and Nonna (when she can) move in loving practiced ritualised actions as they instruct me through the steps of this unrecorded family recipe. How to cook gnocchi is a way of strengthening the ties that exist within our family. One day I will no longer be the girl who shapes the gnocchi before laying them out on trays but the woman who feeds a family and after that the grandmother who teachers her granddaughter. The teaching ...
