Procrastination

· Dahab, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt · GMT +2hrs An extension It always amazes me how time passes when one has positively nothing to do. 4 nights we've now spent here in Dahab and we still don't know when we're leaving. The reason we don't know is because we have yet to go to Mt. Sinai (organising a trip there is proving quite the task) and we're condemning ourselves to continue doing nothing here in Dahab until we do. I should say continue doing 'not much' because we have found ways to pass the t...

Sorry, I'm not comng home.

That's it, we've found paradise and I'm NOT leaving (at least that's what I'll tell myself until June 30). We arrived here in Dahab from Cairo about a week ago (not totally sure since time stands still). We're staying at a place called Penguin's which has a hotel, restaurant, and dive shop on the southern tip of town. Did not move from the premises for the first 5 days except to go to a dive site. Loads of new friends, 4 dives so far, 3 world cup matches a day for a week, hours and hours just...

Vacation within a vacation

After spending a week in the busy cities of Cairo and Alexandria, Dave and I were very excited to get to Dahab on the Red Sea for 5 days. The part of Dahab were we stayed is a strip of restaurants, hotels and tour companies right on the edge of the sea. Most of the restaurants are bedouin style, the floor covered in rugs and mats, with cushions everywhere and palm tree trunks as back rests and dividers. Our hotel had a balcony with a spectacular view of the sea and palm trees. There's not a l...

Into Egypt we go

We arrived at the port at 10am. We walked from the information center to the immigration office, back to the information center, back to above the immigration office to the ticket office, back to immigration, back to the information center. We thought the people needed a bit of entertainment and who else to provide it but a couple of backpackers.
Although we had been told by numerous people that the slow ferry can take between 5 and 24 hours (how this is possible is unknown as the crossi...

Tea in the desert with the Bedouins...

Now that Maureen and I are in Dahab, its been very easy to get right into the laid back life-style of being here. Years ago this used to be a big hippie town, and still is by most standards. But as times change and always seem to go more upscale, so goes out the more casual way of things, and in comes the more modern style to attract more of a diverse crowd. It is still very laid back here , no high rises, and still very poor villages just around the corner from where all the tourists stay an...

Mt.Sinai in the dark..with lots of other Pilgrims

We decided to this sunrise hike to Mt. Sinai early this morning, because seeing the sunrise at the top was something that was life changing, magical...and to walk back down the steps of Redemption, the same steps that Moses used, all 3750 of them. So this was our plan...and one of the reasons we took that 10 hour bus ride over to the Red Sea, to experience this amazing journey. Our day started out at actually the night before, as we were picked up at 11 pm for it was a 2 hour drive to the bot...

Paradise in the middle of Chaos - the Red Sea!!!

This place was amazing... we wished we had stayed here the whole time. Stay tuned for more details ...so the penguin village was in charge of our tours... we got to go snorkeling for 50LE, which translates to $10USD, with equipment and transportation included!!! isn't that amazing. of course once we got to the beach - we were taken to this 'special' restaurant where we had to buy at least 2 beverages or something cheesey like that. so in case you do this type of thing, remember to bring money...

Please note:

Chill Out

I am reclining on cushions, within reach of the ocean. My honey sheesha pipe bubbles beside my Turkish coffee and me. On my other side, Bo blissfully nibbles on banana and chocolate pancakes. The late afternoon sun warms us in the constant breeze and illuminates the mountains of Saudi Arabia across the Gulf of Aqaba. Perhaps later we will take a walk down the boardwalk to take stock of each beachfront restaurant's daily offering of fresh fish, perhaps we will go snorkelling along the coral re...
