South Water Caye, Belize Cayes, Belize, 501-522-2044
... yellow, so many stingrays, you kind of bore of them, crabs, lobsters, to many fish to name. easily the best reef dive i have ever done.
Due to all this excitement i munched through my air in about 10 minutes faster than the other two divers so agreed to ascend to the boat myself so that they could enjoy the rest of the dive.
missing out the details, i took my kit off and got into the boat and what happened for the following hour was one of the most scary things that has ever ...
... Mario giggled and said ‘you mean Brain Coral’…. Obviously someone else thought that too!!!!) At one point Mario took off his flippers and signalled to us to race him across the sand at the bottom… we easily beat him but I got distracted by a tiny translucent shrimp in my path which was fascinating (although it took me a LONG time to get Anwen to see what I was pointing at!!) Anwen ended with more air in her tank ...
Tobacco Caye, Belize Cayes, Belize sarahelective... then back to the hospital. Still no patients, so spend an hour in the polyclinic marvelling at the similarities and differences from healthcare in England. Still don’t quite understand the Belizean system…but we have plenty of time to learn! Left the hospital at about 4 to discover the clouds had gone, sun was shining and the sky was blue so headed straight to the beach. Didn’t quite brave a swim in the sea ...
Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize sarahelective... venturing about, walk the streets which are basically filled with little Asian run supermarkets and only a few places to eat. The rastamen are out enjoying a drink and we soon hear that an exciting local soccer game starts in about half hour. We grab some delicious take away fried rice from the local Asian family, as there is not much else to choose from and we head to the field. Everyone is ...
Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize cosbo... a car so we'd have to take the bus. According to Lonely Planet, the bus drops you at Maya Center and from there you can take a taxi for the 6 miles to the entrance. Fine. We met at the bus station the following morning and Greg said the ATM had eaten his card so he didn't have any money. I hate to sound cold hearted, but I just didn't trust it. It's not an uncommon thing for local men to ...
Dangriga, Belize margreet98... day there we met a bunch of locals other travelers who we ran into 4 or 5 times a day. Tuesday we went out for our first bar night of our trip. Ladies night at a bar that had sand floors and played classic club material, we got dancing lessons from a local waitress and had a constant stream of suiters, both local and traveler alike. We spend until today on the island just relaxing and taking in the scenery. Snorkling took up one half day, and the rest was spent eating ...
Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize trishsteph... the sun on day 2 we ended up on Tobbaco Caye, around twice the size of our last island, so basically still weener. The rum had been flowing more during the day this time and we had done some major group bonding. Emmet decided to live up to the Irish stereotype and get a good old fashioned hooley going with the locals in the beach bar, except to the beat of drums, not trad music. I had to put him to bed a few hours later but not before he'd boogeyed with a 4 year old and 67 year ...
Dangriga, Belize globetrotterch... in Cuba to discourage them from doing a runner to the US cos of their crazy government and all back home. But anyway one of the Cuban doctors at our hospital ran away with the male scrub nurse who apparently is his boyfriend! They both just didn't turn up to work that day and when someone went to their house it was completely empty. Scandalous as, but a bit of an upset for the hospital cos now they're even more short-staffed. On our last day in Dangriga we went to a barbeque ...
Dangriga, Belize jenni_poortman... money and land to make them vote for their party, and there's all sorts of scandal within parliament. Dr Espat's dad is a politician in Punta Gorda so she had to travel down there to vote and invited us to come along and explore the town. Her dad shouted us lunch and then we went and hung out at her parents' mansion house where they fed us heaps of beers. Was such a cool place and they have a big pet crocodile and talking birds hehe. There were people camped outside ...
