last night in Santorini

Well, a very enjoyable last night in Santorini. had dinner at a lovely restaurant overlooking the sunset strip. Pity it wasn't the clearest of nights but still spectacular.
Dinner consisted of grilled pork with pureed red pepper and potatoes with cheese and Souvlaki Lamb with baked potato.
A 5.00 am start got us on to the flight to Athens then Rome.

Last day in Santorini

After a sleep in we wandered into town to choose a suitable location for our anniversary dinner tonight (21 years!).
As usual we just had to take more photos ~ don't worry, after a few more tonight this will be all of Santorini.
Next, Italy where the forecast is 0 to 14 degrees. BRR BRR

Ahoy There!

The weather has improved remarkably, the wind dropping from the 40 knot+ from yesterday as we set off on the sailing vessel "Captain Yannis". We departed Amoudi Wharf and motored to Nea Kameni, the volcano island, where we saw the evidence of eruptions dating back to 1630 BC.
That first eruption was 70 times larger than Krakatoa in Indonesia and produced a tsunami 250m high!
The most recent eruption was in 1950 and even today we could see hot steam venting from the ...

Greek Islands

... The island is so beautiful and looks like it is covered with snow but it is actually the white houses- all of the towns are located up high on the mountain rather than down at sea level. The donkey ride up was hilarious! Women were screaming and the greek men were trying to make them understand that they were scaring the donkeys and needed to shut up. It was a little bit scary because the donkeys got really close to the edge of the pathway and they didn't care if ...

Beaches and Bars

... Town and on Mylopotas Beach, both were a short walk from where we were staying. As it was getting close to the end of the season, there weren't many people around and the weather wasn't great for swimming. It was nice to spend the afternoon in one of the beach front cafes, drinking beers and soaking up the sun. A great chance to relax. We went out that evening with a couple of Israeli friends who were staying at the same place we were. Despite half of the ...

on the boat....again

... trying to find accomadation, we were taken to see this hotel and the room seemed ok so we decided to stay. It was a little small, double bed but it would do the trick until we found out there was no shower curtain, no hot water, no plumbing for the toilet and we had a baby lizard come to welcome us. So we left there and found another near-by hotel to stay at. We hit the beach early around 10:30am and stayed till ...

The mullet lives on...

... they say that there will still be ants and cockroaches. I've amended that sttement to include pigeons. Seriously, they're scary here. The way they look at with beady eyes and pointy beaks...*shudder* 15. There's a great museum for the unibrow in Europe. It's called Greece. 16. The sunset in Ios is the most spectacular I've ever seen. (I'm watching it right now) 17. The Louvre is too big for it's own good. I spent 8 ...

Finally leaving

... Maybe it was because I was able to unpack (you may not appreciate the joys of a dresser, but I do now) and settle down, develop a set of friends and have a sense of home, I don't know. But this place brought out the best in me. The problem, the thing that drove me away (I'm leaving this day, by the way) and ultimately drives most people away who have been here as long as this, is that Ios also has a way of bringing out the worst in people as well. Early on, it was hard to ...
