... through the old walled part of the city with a guide. We met our guide at 8am and for the next three hours she took us through narrow alleyways, into very old buildings and up and down cobbled streets. We visited the Palace of the Grand Master built on the highest point of the city and the Street of the Knights where the medieval knights lived after they were expelled from Jerusalem and before they went to Malta.

The guide on our first trip was wrong when he told us about the Colossus of Rhodes, the giant statue that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

As we passed the entrance to the city’s harbor, our guide had told us that the Colossus had stood here, that it was built in 280 BC, and that it stood only for 56 years until it was destroyed ...

After a day at sea (and some time to recharge our batteries), we were in Rhodes today. It was hot, especially in the enclosed alleys of the old town. The history of Rhodes goes back to the ancient Greeks. During the Middle Ages, the island became the stopping point for passing Crusaders on their way to mix it up with the Muslims. We began to hear stories about the Knights of St John in Malta. Now, we come across much ...
