The Lake Tahoe of South East Asia

After leaving Mui Ne, we took a harrowing bus ride to Dalat, or the Lake Tahoe of Vietnam. The ride was harrowing, because our psycho bus driver insisted on driving 75 miles per hour up this amazingly winding road nearly crashing head on into a truck (at least twice) sending us off the steep edge and plummeting to our death! At least that's the way Laura described it, as she reached for her anti-anxiety pills! Dalat is one of the four major cities in Vietnam's Central Highlands. It is also th...

Known to be one of the most popular honeymoon destinations for Vietnamese, this is not what attracted me to the scenic, mountainous area of Da Lat. I ended up staying in the town for about 5 days and wish I could have stayed longer. I alternated lazy days and active days as this was easily one of my favorite places in Vietnam. I was traveling with a girl from Norway, who I met in Laos and randomly bumped into again in Saigon and after a couple days of settling in, we went rock climbing near t...

Good Morning Vietnam for the last time (4now!)

After arriving in Ho Chi Minh/ Saigon for my last night, the hotel where Laurita had stayed (and allowed me to get refreshed/cleaned after we ran through the overflowing drains up to our knees) had decided not to save me a room as discussed as i hadn't paid in advance and they had a couple through that morning. Fair enough, but i wasn't interested in going far and so crossed the street to the 'Peace Hotel' where i got about a third off the price - something i leant is a reasonable standard fo...

Easy Riders of Dalat

Thanks for joining us in Dalat. We got to our hotel - Peace Hotel 1 - which had a little restaurant on the main floor - Peace Cafe (of course), which looked right out of an episode of the Twilght Zone. The place had character like an old diner one might find along a road somewhere in a place people hardly ever go to. Something just lost in time. Anyway, it didn't take long for one of the locals to start chatting up Norm. His name was "River". He and his buddy, "Rainbow", were motorcycle guys ...

Da Lat

12th We arrived in Da Lat the hillside retreat town at around 3ish. The bus journey had been long with a couple of stops but we enjoyed it.- the same could not be said for a German couple who seemed to be getting very irate at the length of time being taken to get to our destination (the bus was supposed to get in at 1ish).We took a minivan to our hotel, the Peace hotel 2 (Hoa Binh 2) which was really nice and cheap also. The hotel was linked to the Peace hotel 1 across the road that had a tr...

Its Hells Angels Time!!

... it home so we picked up a nice cheap Kodak one on our last day there which will be grand for the remainder of the trip and having only really used it today I think I prefer it to the old one! Anyhoo did the inevitable session on our first night in Saigon. Got sucked in by happy hour and some friendly folk and ended us walking home in the lashing rain at about 2am (thankfully not as many scooters around at that hour!). Next day we went for a wander around the city ...

... of my life.

Next we jumped off of a cliff into the river below. Apparently the jump was ten meters for the highest level which Tom jumped from and probably six meters for me. I admit it took me a few minutes to work up the courage to jump. After swimming in the river, we hiked for at least twenty minutes before reaching our final abseiling challenge, a waterfall nicknamed "The Washing Machine." Basically the cliff is flat for the first ten feet or so and then ...

Discovering Dalat

... a picture.

Even more appalling were the garish looking larger than life-sized, buck tooth rabbit and gnome sitting on the front lawn. These, along with an out of place mini Swiss chalet were clearly constructed to entertain the tourists. If that weren't enough, horses are available so little ones can be dressed up like cowboys, plopped on to the saddle and pose for a picture. Not too sure how the gnome, rabbit and horses key in with the ...
