After a nice relaxing day yesterday we are ready to go to places, see things and meet people. My brother, Gyuri decided the best thing to do is to drive a couple hours to see a painting. I don't mind that in a small over populated country there's got to be a "painting" closer. The time spent together will make the trip all better.
We headed to Ópusztaszer, a tiny village that is home to a panoramic painting that ...
Things really shut down in Europe on Sundays and Szeged was no exception. It's particularly bad in smaller towns when you're hungry and everything's closed...we felt like hobos, searching for food, and especially so when we stumbled across a Knorr van offering free soup-in-a-bun samples, and dove in!
Aside from closed shops though, there were certainly more pretty buildings, and even a lovely fountain to see!
I love flying over clouds. The people underneath are having darkness, maybe storms or snow and I'm up in eternal sun. Today over the clouds we had superhigh clouds above us. We were like million meters in the air, above the clouds but still had some more clouds just above. Then it all became clear. Hungary doesn't get much rain but gets hot sunny ...
Szeged, Hungary tierecke... It is the administrative centre of the North Bačka District. The city serves as the cultural and political centre for the Hungarians, Bunjevci, and Croats in Vojvodina. The largest percent of declared Yugoslavs in Vojvodina could be also found in Subotica.
Subotica, Serbia and Montenegro sall... and her Hungarian boyfriend, Gergor. When he shook my hand he said, "my name is Gergor," and I thought, "oh good, he speaks english." But his english pretty much ended there, and Valerie was called upon to translate for the next two days, which I'm sure was exhausting for her, because Gergor clearly like to talk. Occasionally he would break out some english, and say something like "Shakespeare: To beer, or not to beer. That is the question." Another thing ...
Szeged, Hungary cantelon-polley... wouldn't take the 5 minute detour. Veri convinced us to come to Sutomore where she acted as tourist agency and translator, securing a huge apartment with bedroom, kitchen, dining table, bathroom, and a back yard full of kiwis, apples and pomegranate's all for just 10euros a night. We stayed 5 nights here either side of our jaunt to Albania, enjoying some home comforts and chatting with the locals. My highlight was watching Montenegro win the ...
Subotica, Serbia and Montenegro baileyandkerry... 100 times all over it in all different colours. I considered buying it and wearing it down the main drag of Red Fern just to see how many different ways I could be murdered but decided against it for some reason. Until next time... P.S I still haven't had the chance to get to the salami and paprika museum, but don't worry there is still time. P.P.S Still haven't managed to get the pics uploaded but promise they are not far off now ....
Hodmezovarsarhely, Hungary vdevaiWell after a 30-hour commute from Australia I am in Hungary - the crazy old place where I was born. I have always felt a strong connection with the place, yet find it so, so strange. But first a bit about the trip over. Having only done the trip once before in 1999, I was little anxious about the 22-hour flight. But after viewing more movies than I ever have in one sitting, consuming more meals than I will ever ...
Szeged, Hungary vdevai... that brings in the tourists, as the dramatic Hungarian-style Art Nouveau buildings are the best examples of their kind outside Budapest, Kecskemet and Marosvasarhely (today Targu Mures, in Romania). Overall, the town feels like a Hungarian city that somehow ended up on the wrong side of the border - which, if you ask the Magyars, is precisely what happened. It makes for a dramatic switch from the minarets and Turkish bazaars of Kosovo and Macedonia. Though there is tourism about ...
