... at home in Myrtle Beach, spending Christmas with my son who’s visiting from Colorado we decide to take a day playing tourist. We hit the wax museum and the aquarium, the alligator farm and Margaritaville. The New Girl in Town

"Come ta da front of da class, and get on yer knees," my French teacher demands.

I slowly walk to the front of the room. I'm puzzled and confused. Why am I being instructed to do such a thing on my first day in this new school? I wonder. Am I being punished for something? I’ll be 16 in three weeks. I’m too old to be treated like a child.

“Why do I have to get on my knees?” ...
