1st couchsurfing in Israel

... up for that with a hell of a lot of conversation! It was nice though, I had a nice few hours there and then went to sleep in the evening after half a watermelon. I had to sleep with the cat (very scary looking thing - see the photos!) and with all the chinchillas darting around all over the place, it was definatly an experiance.

In the morning I had breakfast with Oleg and then left on the bus to the centre of Haifa ariving at the Bahai gardens just in time ...

Who are you?

... is that of Jesus. This is the point at which he sets his face toward Jerusalem and the cross. We went on from there to visit one of the most clearly Biblical sites here: Ancient Dan. The temple that Jeroboam built is here and excavated, thousands of years old (read 1 and 2 Kings). You can see the place where they killed the animals for the sacrifice, the altar, and other adjacent rooms. Now talk about ancient ...

Life on a lake

... jump in the pool. At the end of the day today, we took a boat ride across the lake. It was just beautiful. The weather has been gorgeous, and today was no different. Nonetheless, I can see how this lake could get nasty in a storm. I've also been amazed that, despite the throngs of tourists, I've managed to find myself alone or almost alone at just about every place we've visited. The solitude doesn't last long, but it is sweet.

JUDAISM, ON MASTURBATION

... year, during the last of my days in Tzfat, while I waited for my landscaping job to pay me, a religious man handed me a pamphlet. A pamphlet full of masturbation-related informational material. Oh, joy. The Jewish pamphlet told why it's important to be "Shomer Habris" (literally: He Guards his Penis). The main step in doing so is the cessation of masturbation. Here are some quotes; I'll begin with the information that, to me, seems believable, perhaps even wise ...

WHEN A GOOD KIBBUTZ GOES BAD

... I travel, one could also say I'd turned to suffering. Suffering brings strength. Thus, with each new trip, I'm attaining new characteristics that a girl might view as making me special. This is good. Right now, neither Vika NOR my second-favorite girl in the world likes me very much. Or, maybe I'm just totally confused? A turtle-faced Cypriot man who drove me in a sportscar said: when picking up women, "At least 30% of it is the car." Furthermore ...

Reaching new heights in Israel's north

... display we have witnessed. Driving for another 45 minutes, we finally hit the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee, or the Kinneret as the locals call it, and caught route 92 along the Eastern shore to our new home at Kibbutz Ein Gev. Quickly checking in, we dropped off our things and ran down to the beach to catch a magical sunset over these Holy shores. In the morning, we fired up the Micra and sling shot her up the steep hills of the Golan ...

... were possessed by demons (Matt 8:5-18). He also taught in the synagogue in Capernaum (Mark 1:21; John 6:59). We walked though the excavated ruins of the lakeshore town, paying special attention the 4th century synagogue that would have been built on the foundation of the one where Jesus taught. There are so many thoughts that come to one's mind in places like this, trying to imagine what it would it would have been like, and all the momentous ...

Sailing, Are You Going to Eat That?, Baptism

... in the mud along the shore there in 1986. It was a severe drought that year and the water had greatly receded and the boat was found. They dated the boat back to 2,000 years ago. Jesus could have been in that boat! Then we went to the Korazim ruins, one of three cities that Jesus rebuked for their lack of faith. He preached there for three years. We drove by Kursi ...

Caesarea

... stretches along the beach is a double one. The outer waterway was built by Herod, but the second was added under the Emperor Hadrian (117-38 BCE). Also a low aqueduct was built later, this may be found a bit further to the North. Hadrian also left a statue, at least it is thought to represent him, made of dark green porphyry. This is now in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
