Ostend, Belguim was a quick 2 night stopover on our way to Amsterdam.

It had a huge beach and a large esplanade with some cool orange art features.

It was empty of people and would be one of those places that come alive in summer.

We did a day trip to the nearby gorgeous city of Bruges.

This is a cool city centred around a couple of big plazas, lots of canals and pretty photo

It was built back in the 13th century and added to over the centuries. It was a bit of a wait but worth it. By the time I reached the top the bells were chiming. (See video.) ... we reached Retranchement, near the site of a bridge that was first built by the Canadians as they reclaimed the area from the Germans. We had enough time for another ceremony to pay tribute to Hickman, a Canadian killed at the bridge in the line of duty, and then it was off again. By this point, we’d been on the road for about 7 to 7 hours. After passing pastoral fields where the horses tried to race alongside us and the donkeys trotted to ...

To beer or not to beer

... to Jesus. Last trip we saw St Peter's tomb and I didn't think anything would top that. Don't get me wrong, St Peter's Basilica is still my favourite church and my overall highlight from both trips. But this time we have seen the Shroud of Turin, John the Baptist's skull and now Christ's blood. It's something special. By now it was lunchtime. I would generally consider that too early for a drink, but we walked past a beer place and I just had to go ...
