Patong Paradise......or just plain party town

Saying farewell to the tour, I caught a free shuttle bus to my home for the next 2 nights. The Patong Merlin. Right in the heart of Patong beach and party town. It was a shame that I was so sick to do anything! I checked in and headed straight to the pool, where I spent the rest of the day relaxing. Swimming in one of the three pools, with palm trees swaying and the sun shining and working on the tan. I did manage a short walk along the markets that night. My room at the Merlin is lovely, a n...

Birthday Boy "Thai's" One On !

Sawasdee Krub! It's hard to believe that 43 months ago today, the island of Phuket met disaster as a tsunami pushed its ferocious waves along the western beaches of this beautiful island. Hit hard was Patong beach and in particular, the Patong Merlin Hotel, our hotel for our stay here in Phuket! There's little evidence of that fateful day as tourists continue to visit, vendors continue on with business and Thai people carry on with their life! On a much happier note, Birthday Boy Rick celebra...

Enjoying Patong Beach !

Sawasdee Krub! Since arriving on the beautiful island of Phuket on the Andaman Sea, it's been rather difficult to pry ourselves from our poolside lounge chairs at the Patong Merlin Hotel. Lounging around the pool, soaking up the Thai sun, having hotel staff bring us pina colada's on our beckin call - this is living in Relax mode! But then again, we've been on holiday for eleven months already! How much more relaxed can we become! Well, that's a challenge worth pursuing! Even Howie, and his wi...

Speeding Around The Phi Phi Islands !

Sawasdee Krub! This morning, we woke up early to catch a van by Phuket Siam Seacanoe Tours for our transport to Chalong Pier on the Southeast corner of Phuket Island and our day tour of the Phi Phi Islands. The van was full as it traveled south passing along the beaches of Karon and Kata before heading east to Chalong. It was a good opportunity to see these beaches which appeared as beautiful as Patong itself. The forecast for today was hot and humid temperatures with mostly sunny skies! Idea...

Reflecting On This Beautiful Island !

Sawasdee Krub! Over the past week we've thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Phuket Island and in particular at Patong Beach. The Andaman Sea offers beautiful sunsets! The streets come alive in the evening with people and street vendors! The market stalls are a good place to get a bargain! The restaurants offer great food at a good price! The Thai people provide great service with a smile! Tomorrow we depart this great island and country! Sawasdee Krub! Rick & Elsie!

Straight Into It!

Of course we're still on Sydney time which is 3 hours ahead of Thailand time. So we wake at 5am and try to go back to sleep. The plan is to meet for breakfast at 8am (Thai time). There's a knock at the door and it's Dad and Mei-Mei, fully dressed and all perky. "Let's go for a walk" Dad says. Rob and Henry jump up and happily oblige while I try to grab more sleep. I've got a busy week scheduled considering that we'll be in Khao Lak for the final week and by all accounts, there's not much happ...

"John Gray's Sea Canoe" Day

I booked this tour in November from Sydney - an all day trip discovering the limestone caves of Phang Nga bay by sea canoe, including meals, drinks and transfers to/from accommodation. As usual I was a bit worried about how Mum and Dad would handle it, especially Mum considering that she doesn't swim let alone go outdoors much. I had rung and spoken to Mr John Gray personally who assured me that the majority of his clients can't swim and that his staff are all certificate trained life-savers;...

Phuket Zoo and shopping in Phuket Town

We get up at 7am for an early breakfast (it's 10am in Sydney). The breakfast selection is really good. I haven't mentioned the egg stations - there are 3 and this is the low season! One is for scrambled and omlettes, another for poached and boiled, and the other for fried eggs. Henry of course is in egg heaven and has had an omlette every morning in addition to the bacon, hash browns, pancakes etc AND we tell him he has to eat fruit as well. We're even allowing him a daily cup of coffee (load...

Pum's Cooking School and Simon Cabaret Day

For Dad, Rob and the kids today was a welcome "program free" day. Dad had arranged with Kip to take him into Phuket Town for a traditional Thai massage and for Rob, I had written out a list of important yet very exciting jobs to accomplish (collect laundry; contact Tara; organise island tour and Mr Nat for Saturday etc) whilst Mum and I spent the day at a cooking class at Pum's Restaurant and Cooking School. The cooking class included interactive tuition for any 4 Thai dishes (chosen from the...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Patong Merlin Hotel Phuket

Best hotel in Phuket

from szekeres101
Fantastic hotel, me and my boyfriend travelled around Thailand for 8 weeks and decided to stop in Phuket for 5 days before travelling onto Krabi, to put it straight we ended up extending our stay to 7 nights and then travelled onto Krabi, we didnt like Krabi at this time of year and decided to go straight back to the Patong Merlin Hotel for an extra 5 nights, I give it 10 out of 10.

The rooms are beautiful, especially ask for the rooms in the block above reception as they are newly decorated in modern taste plus you get the glorious sunshine on your balcony most of the day, the only downside is the nighttime entertainment but there are plenty of other hotels with better entertainment at night but not offering the quality service and laidback grounds. I insist you book at this hotel, I will definately be returning next year.

Patong Merlin Best Resort in Patong without a Doubt!

from A TripAdvisor Member
PATONG MERLIN IS THE BEST RESORT IN PATONG... My Family stayed there for a month and by god would do it again. The staff are ACE without a doubt, you have the BEST and BIGGEST buffet breakfast everymorning, three pools that are just fantastic considering they are clean and having pool boys come around all the time serving you with pina cooladas and whatever else of your choice! The rooms were just superb very clean and were attended to everymorning by housekeeping, coming back from the pool and having everything spotless and personal belongings untouched is just fantastic!!! Patong Merlin is situated in the best part in Patong, central to EVERYTHING!!!! I cannot stress how good it was, i was there for a whole month and everyday was superb! I dont know how to say thank-you enough to the people at Patong Merlin they were just fantastic KA POUN KA!!!. Its a fun and AWESOME resort!! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND IT TO EVERYONE!!

BEST TIME!!!!

My boyfriend and myself are in our early 20's and we stayed at the Patong Merlin Hotel at the beginning of this year for 10 nights. We have no complaints what so ever. Our room was fantastic and was cleaned immaculately everyday. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection of breakfast food being available. We personally loved the omlettes which were cooked to order! =) When we eventually are able to go back to Phuket we wll definetely be coming back to this hotel. Just one tip though, take advantage of the taxi drivers who are in the hotel. They are employed by the hotel and offer great friendly airconditioned service at the same rate as a tuk tuk or taxi outside the hotel. They are situated in the lobby and are able to take you anywhere you want. One more thing, take advantage of happy hour at the lobby bar, buy one get one free between 6-8pm every night.

Best hotel on Patong Beach!!!

from flippa
I stayed at the Patong Merlin Resort for 11 nights, and I cannot complain about a single thing. The service was first class, and the food served by all the resturants was exceptional. The themed buffet was a favourite of mine, but with so many other choices of cuisine outside of the hotel, you would be silly to not dine anywhere else.

The rooms were small but nice, and when you go to a place like thailand all you do in your room is sleep, in which the room cattered nicely for.

The hotel has 3 stunning pools, and it is situated across the road from the beach. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, as it exceeded all my expectations, and it is great value for money.

Simply the best

My wife & I have stayed at the Patong Merlin on 4 occassions in the last 5 year's and love every minute of bieng there. The pool's and ground's are fantastic, as are the staff who are so friendly & helpfull. The breakfast's are great and a will keep you going well into the day. The rooms are a bit tired looking but clean and well attended to. We are looking forward to our 5th visit in 10 day's time, and cant wait to get back to a lovely hotel in a great location...Ronnie.

Fantastic Resort!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Myself and two friends stayed at the Merlin in July 2005. It was fantastic! The staff were super friendly and always on hand to help, the resort has been restored beautifully after the Tsunami, the room was great and the grounds were amazing!

Three gorgeous pools to choose from in palm tree heaven! Fantastic location - 5 minute wall into central Patong and 2mins to the beach but its own oasis. You would think you were on your own island. Didn't eat dinner at the hotel but the buffet breakfast was amazing and happy hour cocktails by the pool so cheap!

We are coming back next year and we will be staying here. Fantastic value and can't thank the staff enough for our wonderful holiday.

Fantastic resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Patong Merline in July 05. I can say my time there was nothing short of fantastic. The grounds/pools were amazing, the hotel staff were so friendly and helpful and bent overbackwards to provide service. The rooms were clean, comfortable and above the standard that i was expecting.

In terms of location - this resort is an oasis in the heart of Patong. You would think you are on your own island, yet you are a 5 minute walk to town and 2 mins to the beach.

I thoroughly recommed people stay at the Merlin and i for one am going back next year!

Merlin Patong

from kellyj22
The grounds and pool at this hotel were fantastic however everything else was terrible! The rooms were old and worn. There was a damp, musty smell in the room (2204). Reception also smelt musty + damp.

The staff were friendly but it took us almost and hour to check in (at 2AM!). We were charged a small fortune for using the phone in the room. Rates are not displayed so BE CAREFUL!

The location is fine however. Its just right across the road from the beach and its also at the end of the beach, away from the chaos of the bar/club area, yet its still central.

We didn't try the restaurant BUT all the food was cooked outside and when walking past we could see all kinds of insects crawling it.

Overall, I'd say that the hotel is ok but thats only based on the beautiful pool area.

Nice resort

from Tygaman
The resort has 3 excellent pools and plenty of sun lounges. Preferred to swim here than the crowded Patong beach.

The airconditioned rooms were good with private balcony.

Staff were friendly and helpful which makes this hotel worth the stay.

Great pools, but past its best

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here as part of a Thai adventure in December 2003. Maybe we were spoilt by the other amazing hotels we stayed at in Thailand, but this was a slight disappointment.

The complex itself was pretty, if slighlty dated, but the corridors reminded us of prisons, and our room, while absolute fine, was worn and dated (although perfectly clean).

The pool complex was amazing though, and plenty of sun loungers around, in different areas. Patong beach is very crowded and busy, so you will probably want to stick around the pool if you want to sun bathe.

Patong itself seemed to be the Blackpool of Phuket - the lovely resort that my sister stayed at 7 or 8 years ago has been turned into Bangkok by the Sea. Only place in Thailand we saw any trouble, and when you are looking for somewhere to eat and are walking past McDonalds, KFC and Irish bars you realise you may have lost the plot!

Patong also very expensive compared to the rest of Thailand, so although there are more night markets here, expect to pay higher prices.

Basically, if you are going to Thailand, to actually get a taste of what it is about, no point coming to Patong!
