... relaxing 4 hour hike through local villages, past little children who have mastered the phrase "un sol, un sol" ("one dollar", "one dollar" - few children are that cute), and through rolling hills between mountain peaks to arrive at the first camp site Paria, at 3800m. We erected our "two" man tent - "two" in inverted commas as it became apparent it was more a 1 1/4 man tent; it was minuscule - had dinner and enjoyed the sun setting behind a giant snow ...
Huaraz, Peru eugenecashSo I need to make a few corrections from the last post in regards to the height of Lake 69 in Huascaran National Park, Peru. First of all the height was meant to be in feet not meters and the actual height of the lake is 4600 ft. All things considered it might as well have been 10, 000 ft. It was the most grueling 3ish hours I have ever done. We started out by driving from Huaraz to the National Park which took us about 2 hours over roads that aren´t fit for ...
Huaraz, Peru, Peru bkrabel... had stores at the campsites where you can buy beer, cigerettes, and toilet paper. Peru... ahhh, Peru. There were kids my age struggling to get through the trek, crying in joy and completely awe struck when making it up the pass, I was so over it. I've seen better stuff on the back side of Bishop- definitly not tear provoking. I just stepped right over them while they rolled around dramatically, grasping for air, sobbing at the beauty, thanking the heavens for the ...
Huaraz, Peru glennrdohertyHow do you spell relief? NO HEADACHE!
Got a full day of walking around. Twice to the market, as usual we have way too much food! The mules will not like Lali
Met with Manuel, our arriero, today, so that is a second part of the relief, now we know we are all set for the trip. Carrying the monster backpacks is not in my list for sure! He has invited us to stay with him and family at his place ...
... step in full mountaineering gear, the surroundings were completely bathed in a gorgeous pink, early morning sunrise hue.
So we set off, crampons digging into the icy snow. The terrain is unforgiving, now, completely straight up. 50 to 60 degrees. We´re worn out after 1 slog up to some level terrain. We all pull our cameras in an attempt to catch some breath. The guides are unphased. We ascend up 1 more steep part. I am leading the group, setting the pace, and am ...
... time to climb, the snow is firmer and avalanche risk is lower.
Urus (5420m) had a hard walk-in - steep and rocky - before an easier small snow cap to the summit. We went up the steep face of Ishinca and descended the shallow one, after a long but easy walk-in. Ishinca (5530m) was a more interesting and enjoyable mountain for all of us, although we could not find the trail back after leaving the snow and ended up descending a large, hot and dusty scree slope in desperation ...
... to hit the comforts of our oh so soft mattress. We got up early to beat any day trippers from Huaraz......................and beat them we did. Little did we know that all archaeological ruins are closed to the public on Mondays..............and Monday it was! We could see the excavators busily working on the siteand we pleaded in our best Spanish with the security guard to let us in (after all, we could be one of the excavators?). While he was ...
Huaraz, Peru roamingmonkOff to Huarez we went, so incredibly glad to get out of Lima and back into the mountains for some more stunning scenery, mountain views, from fresher air, and of course some trekking.
After spending a couple of days in town doing the usual walk around tour operators and general wasting time on the internet, and after a couple of days we finally settled on one of the many trek on offer. Four days doing the trek to Santa Cruz in the Huascaran National Park. I´m sure that ...
