Huaraz, Peru avi_einat... the understatement of this travel blog) are morning people, yet for some reason we find ourselves waking up earlier on this holiday than we ever do while working. The morning of the trek was no exception, with a 6am pickup from our hotel followed by a 4 hour drive to the start of the trek. On the way we passed through the town of Yungay, where on May 31, 1970 a landslide caused by the 1970 Ancash earthquake (which destroyed most of Huaraz) buried the whole ...
Huaraz, Peru eugenecash... worry about infections. Ok, enough whining.
The next two days will probably be spent exploring and getting used to this altitude again; I'm hopefully going to take some more Spanish lessons as well. Once my lungs and brain can handle it, I plan to tackle (with a group, or at least a guide) the Huayhuash circuit, an 8-day trek through the Cordillera Huayhuash, another range just to south of Huaraz.

Hasta luego,
Dan
Huaraz, Ancash, Peru dan_the_man... from my high-altitude excursion the day before, I eventually managed to go to the ruins of Chavin de Huantar. These are pre-Incan ruins set high up in the mountains and required a three hour journey just to get there. Fortunately, I managed to get some much-needed sleep on the bus. Just as the day before we made a couple of stops along the way, including at Lago Querococha, which was quite nice and had the usual gathering of indigenous people with cute ...
Huaraz, Peru lisa.gillespieOn our two buses from Nazca to Huaraz via Lima we realised that this would our last mountain stop. Strange as since November with a few exceptions in Buenos Aires, Uruguay and Brazil we'd been following them almost the whole time.
The town itself here is not the most pretty after all the earthquakes its suffered but very laid back for Peru and surrounded by amazing mountains, many over 6000 metres. After a few days in town making use of ...

Everyone´s boots looked like they had come from the salvation army of mountaineering equipment. Mine especially. One boot had no ankle support and the laces barely could tie a double knot at the top to keep them in place ...

It´s way to tough to carry all that weight and do anything out here. Everyone else on the trail has a burro carrying their gear, and a guy to lead the donkey. On day 2, Caroline asked for her donkey and got it.

to be continued....
Huaraz, Peru destin8ion... He asked us to come back the following afternoon to fetch the camera.

The following morning after having another full course breakfast at the hostel, I thought I would just spend the day at the Huaraz town itself while I waited for my camera to be repaired. It was beautiful –sunny-blue skies day but by early afternoon when I went to a local bus station to buy my ticket for my next stop on my trip – Trujillo – it ...
Huaraz, Peru sonnat25... looking at the stonework which has withstood many earthquakes over many, many centuries, I thought to myself, I'm sure like most others, why modern-day builders don't learn from their ancient ancestors the way to build houses and buildings that could withstand any major earthquake. The ancient civilizations knew their environment in which they were living in and adjusted and built according to that. But these days, houses and buildings are ...
