Arriving in Pasadena and first full day

Well, we made it!

Katie and I finished packing our pod and cleaning our apartment about 3 am Saturday morning (July 11th - our move-out day). We then headed up to Katie's parents' house with the large load of items that we were taking with us when we drive out to Austin on August 17th. We finally got to sleep about 4:30 am... just to get up at 7:30 to head back down to Atlanta for the move out.

The move out went pretty well - we only got dinged for the carpet that Grace tore up...

IJCAI Conference

Hi everyone – it's Katie, and I’m writing with my conference update. The conference began in Pasadena, CA last Sunday with the STRUCK (Learning Structural Knowledge from Observations) workshop. My research group from the Cognitive Computing Lab at Georgia Tech and I wrote a paper that got accepted to this workshop, so we got the opportunity to present our work to a bunch of our colleagues. Here’s a link to the paper (http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ukuter/struck09 /final-papers/5.pdf...

Playa Del Rey and Corona

Better late than never - here's our updated on last Wednesday and Thursday evenings. On Wednesday we headed to Playa Del Rey after the third session of the day, since none of the topics for the fourth session seemed interesting. Playa Del Rey is close to LAX, and is where I spent the Sunday afternoon in March when I flew to Los Angles to visit the University of Southern California during the graduate school decision process. Needless to say, Playa Del Rey was much more crowded this time! JT a...

Disney Land

On Thursday I drove out to legoland in Carlsbad, to find that the park was only open for 1 more hour and I would have to pay US$69 to get in, I took a photo of the outside and drove back to Mission Bay. After checking out of the hotel on Friday I drove up the coast to Anaheim and fulfilled the lifelong dream of most children who grew up under capitalism, to visit Disneyland. The Indiana jones ride was very impressive, with some 200m of waiting line which was meticulously decorated like a unde...

Los Angeles

Last day in the US for this trip. I had a whole Saturday to wait in L.A. before my flight back to Australia left at around 10pm. After some googling on popular tourist attractions I decided that the Getty Museum would be worth a visit, given that it is free (minus the $10 parking fee). The architecture alone and the view of LA from the Museum make the trip worthwhile. The sculpture, paintings, other artworks and the central garden are worth seeing. I wasn't allowed to take photos inside, but ...

Disneyland

We thought we had it all worked out. It was mid-week and autumn so it was sure to be quiet however it turned out that it was Veterans Day. Therefore unfortunately for us, Disneyland was EXTREMELY BUSY! We arrived to see the biggest car park in North America being filled. We finally got in, and after waiting in various lines throughout the day managed to tackle ...

L.A.

... corridors, one with mummies all along the side, all fake until the last two who grabbed us as we went past. There was another room with corpses hanging from the ceiling in plastic and you had to push them out of the way to get past and it smelt really badly. We moved rooms in our hostel Thursday and were much happier. The problem with the old room was that it was manily occupied by people who live and work at the hostel so people were cnstantly coming in and out, it was filthy dirsty and ...

LAX - returning to the pit of hell...

... the plane, no shower, most likely still smelled with my crocs on and waltzing into the posh stores! Too funny. I waited to do my browsing after I went to Sephora so that they could see my bag. See! I did buy something! Just not at your store... I wish I could've spent a little while longer in LA driving around to hit some of the hot spots around the area. Actually, Air Canada nearly gave me that opportunity considering they had me booked on the flight home at 2230 but didn't have a ...

LA - City of Angeles (and Demons!)

... playground of the rich and famous, and a noticeably cleaner but equally as bizarre a place as Venice. As we walked past a horde of paparazzi waiting patiently outside a restaurant we realised that this isn't the place people come to find privacy - the LA beaches are definitely a place to watch and be watched. Santa Monica pier is an iconic part of LA's history with its huge fairground and many restaurants and still maintains a very old-school charm. It was ...

LAX to Miami

... about 3" x 18". And lotsa meat. Later our German friend said he got a steak this big and this thick and 2 beers for $12. Someone stuffed some old clothes to make a dummy of a derelict lying in the street. A tin cup was by its side, possibly on the honor system for taking pictures. Some little girls had done the same thing using a teddy bear for the head. So cute. Probably a sign of dire poverty. Montevideo is a great walking city as ...
