... it's that crucifixion would really really really really hurt. Gothic sculpture and painting is famous for it's ultra-realistic depictions of Jesus on the cross, including very detailed wounds, blood, guts, and gore. I think I've really seen enough nailed hands and feet to get the idea that it was not a fun way to die.
After the cathedral, I ate lunch outside in a plaza and old people stared at me because normal people do not eat outside when it's in ...
... wall and creates a defensive battle point. We then walked across the entire city I think to the Convent of St. Theresa. She was born in Avila at this spot in 1515 and is the first woman that the catholic church named a doctor of the church. There is a chapel for her over the spot where the room was that she was born. The church was built in the early 1600s. In that same square is the Palace of Nunez Vela which is now the ...
Avila, Castile-León, Spain amberlee... shape of a grill and is absolutely gorgeous inside, but sadly I could not take many pictures because it was prohibited (though I did sneak in two or three). I had lunch with Adam, Marni, and Alex Hoffman at a nice cafe before getting back on the bus for the second half of the visit. We visited the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), commissioned by Franco in 1940 to commemorate those lost in the Spanish ...
El Escorial, Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands danielpeachAfter our outrageous adventure in Santarem we were on the home stretch of our Pilgrimage. We were heading to Avila the home and birth place of the first female doctor of the church St. Theresa, and John of the Cross. We stayed and prayed in the church dedicated to her and walked around the town, it was a quick visit, and then we were off to Zaragoza.
Avila, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands scboettcher... but the toll to use the road was €7.50! anyway we got to Avila and it is an amazing town with probably the best city walls in Europe they are hundreds of years old (started in the 11th century) and are still in immaculate condition. We went into the cathedral which was beautiful and also walked along the top of the walls. The walls just keep on going and going and going.
Avila, Spain and Canary Islands levine... an amalgamation of Roman, Muslim and Catholic rules. There of course was a huge number of Catholic churches that we saw. We walked all the way around it, thanks to our wonderful tour guide, Susanna. She's just a well of information and had a lot to say on everything. We also saw the Eolicos...or windmills on top of the hills on our way home. Look at Spain going green. After a long day of walking we're all pretty much worn out. Night night, world.
