Our first day in Zermatt was a "getting settled day." We did some shoping, explored the town, and swam in the pool of the Hotel next door. The weather was pretty good and the view of the matterhorn was lovely. We even managed an afternoon walk to Smutt.
Wednesday was our first real hiking day. Evie had been asking the day before to go on a hike, so while Tyler napped, Evie, Tom and Sue hiked from Zermatt at 1,600 Meters to Hotel Edelweiss at 1,900 meters, pretty much straight up from our hotel. She did great and hiked 90% of the way by herself. Of course, we also spent a fair amount of time at the local playground, complete with mini-Matterhorn for climbing.
Sue and Tom decided late in the afternoon to take advantage of the Tram/Gondola/Train infrastructure of Zermatt and spring for a 4 day "unlimited rides" pass. We took advantage by taking the Gornergrat train to 3,200 meters and hiking some of the way back down. The glaciers were impressive, however the views were muted as the weather was a bit cloudy.
... ciao" to this kid and that was the extent of our knowledge of one another, but I was too tired to care, and I've come to expect random things here. Plus, it was butt-suckin cold there, so all I wanted was to huddle under my blankets and sleep.
Usually on Sundays the family goes to church then heads over to the grandparents apartment in Borgo for lunch, where all the aunts, uncles and cousins come too. But the dad, Caesar (pronounced Chezz-ah-ray)(how ...
... used my final day of my eurrail pass for this trip only to find that the trip from Visp station to the Zermatt was not valid despite being told by two train operators that it was. I also couldn't get through to the girl at the station that my eurrail pass allows me discounts for the train but she kept telling me, 'no, no, you can't use anymore days it's full'. Today wasn't the first time I have been stuffed around by the Swiss. It's hard to believe that Einstein was educated here.
We had packed up the Landy by about 8 a.m., and were ready to plan the route to Val d'Isere. With no roadbook to follow, the GPS was put into use, and a quick check against the maps verified that the best route was probably down towards Milan to join the motorway, and take motorways towards Aosta.
So, not much in the way of navigating to be done, except to check the road signs now and again, so the hunt for bingo photos was driven hard today ...
... bit further than we thought, so we got a cab there to be safe.
We had to change trains in Milan and had about an hour to kill there so we went in search of some lunch. We knew that things would more expensive seeing as we were in Milan and we were near the train station, but there wasn't much we could do about it.
We found a pizza restaurant where the guys seemed friendly (they reminded us of 'Fat Pizza!) and the food wasn’t too excessively priced and sat ...
We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertownFarmor agreed to watch Evie and Tyler for 2 days while Sue and Tom hiked to Hornlihut, the refugio at the base of the Matterhorn. Hornlihut is at 3200m directly below the Matterhorn (4400m) and serves as the base camp for those ascending the Matterhorn. When we called for reservations, they asked if we were ...
