... Simon and Elly, having been cycling for 8 days they were looking fit and tanned even if a bit hot and sweaty. We discussed the options for sleeping that night and opted for a youth hostel room which offered safe bike storage. Although the riders were all intact the poor tandem was suffering with the strain of it all , another spoke broken and gears needed sorting, so just the right time to meet up with dad. Once settled into our room the ...

38km, 24-35 deg, fine, clear and hot. A very steamy night in our room, min of about 24deg, without aircon or a fan. The first night we weren't able to find a hotel with aircon and it turns out to be the hottest. As Europe gets warmer in summer the hotels need fans, it's just so still and oppressive without them. The locals say that this period is called "the 10 days of summer". Lucky for most of us we prefer the heat to the cold, ...

43km, 20-37deg, fine and sunny. After an early brekkie in the hotel (B & B Hotel) we were on the way by 8am. Our main objective for today was to visit the Aircraft and Motor Museum at Sinshein. It's one of the biggest in the world. Arrived about lunch time after some challenging navigational issues, mainly due to the fact that we we off the beaten track. However most of the ride was fairly pleasant, with a ...

76km, 18-35deg, fine, clear blue skies and sunny. We had a bread roll with cold meat and cheese, coffee, fruit and yoghurt in our room for brekkie to start the day. The Mercure provided us with a coffee machine and pods which were renewed every day. Got under steam at 8:30am and were on an immaculate bike path immediately, which is completely normal in Germany. Rode through the park where we were yesterday past the Zoo and onto ...

... room for an additional two hours of rest (could hardly call it sleep) before having to rise again.

The remaining party of four now fit a little more comfortably into our Mercedes (limousine) 4-wheel drive vehicle, as we make our way back towards Pforzheim. The plan is to detour via Kassel, where Volker will deliver Gisela and Walter to acquaintances in Grebenstein. After an early breakfast we are all ...
