... friendly streets.
When most people think of Nuremberg, they think of the trials. Unfortunately we were unable to visit Courtroom 600 because the trial memorial isn’t going to be finished until 2010, but also because the room is still used for proceedings to this day. Instead, on our first day, we walked through the town’s squares, saw a religious demonstration and debate that was even more ...
... get ice cream for desert. We all met back up at the train station and headed home.
I really enjoy our little day trips, but they kind of throw a kink in the week. It just leaves you with one less day to work with, but hey, I’m in Europe, I don’t need time. I’ll have time when I get back to The States. We have a few more planned, one to the BMW Museum and another Infineon factory and possibly a few other museums. Oh, and hopefully a soccer game! That will be very fun!!
Today, right after breakfast, we crossed the European Continental Divide. We went into a lock that dropped us down 81 ft. At the bottom it was, as our tour guide said, like being a spider in a bathtub with concrete walls rising up just inches from the sides of the ship.
We docked at ...
... 8230;This team happens to be in the german league and is the home team to Nuremburg! So we just couldn't pass up the opportunity to watch a home game of our beloved team!
The local fans are intense. Coming in full fan gear of scarves, jerseys, flags and some even brought tamtams that were miked up to increase the energy of the crowd! Me and Chris got scarves and a pretzel and beer and sat to ...
... The cheering was intense and we could hear it all from the campsite…pretty fun! The campsite was very nice except for the fact that it was surrounded by acorn trees and we were constantly in fear of our lives! Lol…well just getting a bump on the head! We did get a few nice donks on the camper but it survived. One thing we did notice…no squirrels…very odd!
We explored the ...
... our stuff. The sun had just set as we rang the front door bell and waited to check in. A slow moving, gray haired lady greeted us and gave us our keys, and that was it, no forms to sign, or deposits for keys. This was going to be a good couple days.
We had seperate single rooms here, with sinks in the room, and a bath/shower on the hall. I was on the third floor, Erin on the fourth, up a creaky, ancient staircase. I stowed my gear and went to check ...
... in the same spot). Regensburg was the next town where we docked which is also a lovely quaint town (with of course a beautiful cathedral) The German countryside is so beautiful and everything so clean! I was surprised how much I liked the towns ... felt a connection with my German roots! (more than the beer and pretzels). Also stopped in Passau where we heard a organ concert on one of the largest organs in Germany (again another beautiful cathedral). The ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany pathengerAn early wake-up and a five hour train ride from Berlin to this "most German of German towns," as the Lord Mayor of Nuremburg, in 1933, once said. Franconia, as this part of southern Germany is called, was a pushover for National Socialism: poor, uneducated, hard-working, very nationalistic, having sent a bunch of their sons, brothers, and fathers to the meat grinder that was World War I. The Weimar (pronounced VY-mar)Republic had been harsh, rat-eating, years (1921-1933). Some used ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany mrcolella... normally is returning, I’ve gotta find a new place, but I really have grown to love my location and room. It’s tough to find a furnished apartment for cheap in the center of town. Hopefully it works out (and in the meantime he told me I can stay an extra month in his room!)
The rest of the last few weeks aren’t really worth mentioning. Teaching classes, going to work, ripping my pants in my bike chain on the way to work ...
