Back in the City

So
we have finally overcome our belly-aches and enjoyed
relaxing in Phuket (always near a bathroom). While there, we were
able to get a traditional Thai Massage. As Mike put it, Thai
massages are “intimate.” The ladies who did our massage were
kneeling on our backs stretching our legs out – it's probably a
workout for them (and us). Now we are back in Bangkok for Carla's
birthday and we got a nice hotel room – one that actually
gives you wh...

Birthday in Bangkok

I had a great birthday!
We took the Chao Phraya Express – boat taxis
around the city. It's the easiest and most picturesque way to see
the sights.
First off, the Temple of the
Emerald Buddha or Wat PhraKaew. The grounds here
are breathtaking – the upkeep needed is amazing – we saw lots of
workers re-painting structures. But the upkeep is worth it – the stupas
and figures shine and sparkle like jewels in the sun.
The emerald Buddha it...

The Bizarro World of Thailand

So finally winter break arrived! I was sad that I couldn't be with my family for the first time for Christmas. Really, I was a bit heart broken. But a ticket to America would have set me back about a thousand dollars, and I had a niece on the way...so I wanted to wait it out until the spring. So I decided to take a trip to a place I had always wanted to visit, based solely on it's fine cuisine- Thailand! It just seemed so exotic to me, and I wanted to know what was all the fuss about Bangkok ...

hello Thailand - crazy Bangkok

We're spent almost 5 days in the crazy city of Bangkok, Thailand. It's difficult not to hate this city and slightly love it at the same time. It's hard to explain... It's like watching a train-wreck, you can't help but look at it, but in terror and disgust at the same time. Bangkok is sort of like New York City, but on steroids. It has the size of a mega city, but it has the chaos of say Naples and griminess of Istanbul, but everything multiplied by a 1000. We have the luxury of being in a ni...

One night in Bangkok. Plus one more equals two.

Flew back into Bangkok for 2 nights of further luxury.http://www.parkplaza.com/bangkok th check out the view from the roof (fig.1).  Worryingly hotels in thailand have a shower that can be viewed from the bedroom. (fig.2). Luckily there is a screen you can pull down, but if you want to watch your loved one/family member shower then Thailand is the place for you.  There are lots of lady shows. This sign appears honest (fig.3) but I'd say for absolute accuracy they should remove the 2.  Went to...

Bangkok Craziness...

Well, we've arrived in Bangkok - and now were leaving! We've had a great couple of days visiting the sights: a night market, the grand palace, khao san road (today), and taking all sorts of transport: tuk tuk, sky train, boat, taxi (the last was a bit of an extravagance but it was raining and we'd just arrived and we're treating these two days like a second honeymoon as its our anniversary).

We had a great massage yesterday but had a bit of an adventure getting there - which made us e...

Bangkok welcomes us

We stumbled into the Park Plaza in Bangkok at 1:00 in the morning and crashed immediately. But the seemingly endless trip over was worth it----Bangkok is truly a treat for all the senses. During our first stay in Bangkok we took the subway to the Old City, walked through the bustling trade streets, visited the Grand Palace and Wat Kra Pheo, took a private boat tour down the Chao Phraya river, at Pad Thai from a street vendor, visited Wat Pho, had foot massages, took a taxi up to the Jim Thomp...

Finally!!! A new blog entry!

... Well, the answer is yes. And not to be cliché, but if you go in with an open mind to eating them, they are really not bad. Now don’t get me wrong, it is no southern Conway delicacy, but I could certainly eat them regularly. Thus far me and my friend Daniel (who I teach with and who now lives right next to us) have tried Locus, Water Beetle, and Grubs. The Locus taste like a roasted pumpkin seed, the water beetle just tastes like pooh, and the grubs are actually ...

day 2 thursday 11th december

... about a 10 minute walk away... Quite a pleasant walk. The Kho Sahn really surprised me I thought it would be a really long road but in fact it isnt, its very busy, very toursity, full of bars and hotels. Lots of little warrens off the main street as well which I imagine we will explore later. We eventually get to our hotel - THE DIAMOND HOUSE - SOI 2 SAMSEN ROAD. Hotel is ok i like it, we cant check in yet so whilst were waiting we pick up the pre-booked train ...
