Picture folks at the Bean Tree, at 10am, having a glass of beer or wine; so civilized. Although the Euro exchange rate is knocking me around a little, comparatively, food and drinks etc are quite cheap. We do live in the best country on the planet, but, we pay for it.

I tour the sanctuary and courtyard before making my way next door to the bell tower. I can’t go in, but as I walk up to it I hear a choir practicing inside. I feel so small standing in front of this giant building that has stood for more than 1600 years.

The following morning we will have an 8-hour bus ride to Tamatave/Toamasina, where the Africa Mercy is docked.

I'm pretty nervous for the adventure that lies ahead; but I am confident it will be an unforgettable and life-altering experience. An experience that wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of my parents, my employer, Mercy Ships Belgium and the not-for-profit organisation Acrima. Thank you!

Had a lovely day walking around the two market squares, the food and clothes market stalls and then had lunch watching the people walk by. No churches, museums or art galleries today. Back home for more chatting and snails for dinner. To is truly a great ...
