Christmas Markets and Beautiful Regensburg

... Church (der Dom) because on the tour we only hung around the outside. I'm glad I did it was absolutely amazing. I really wanted to take some photos but we weren't allowed. I videoed for about a minute before you can hear a whisper in the background of 'that sign says no photos/videos allowed' from my friend and I quickly put it down worried that someone would come over and yell at me in German, but they didn't.
Here are some ...

Finally Arrived

... siutcase because Julia carried my suitcase. We then sat on the bus talking for about an hour ( the twilight magazine provided a good talking point, but I'm sorry Tara, shes an Edward fan!!) We went along the 'autobarn' and I swear the whole time only 3 different makes of car passed us- either a BMW, Mercedes Benz or a Volkswagen! I then met her parents at the school, and they are the nicest people I could ever have imagined!! The father (thank god!!) speaks ...

A Medieval Town

Woke up today as we were approaching Regensburg, a well preserved medieval town. I joined Jack and Suzanne for a walking tour of the town. Our guide was very good and had interesting stories to tell about the town’s history. We saw the oldest stone bridge in Germany which was completed in 1146. It was the only Danube crossing for hundreds of years, and was the starting point for the second and third Crusades. We also saw the Roman Gate to the ...

Have I mentioned I love Regensburg?

... it). Art 121 is going to be simple for the class, but we have a paper we have to write that is going to be tough for me because I don't think artistically, nor do I have any background knowledge in that area. But, again, our teacher is awesome. He knows and accepts the fact that we are here to travel, not sit in our rooms doing homework all the time. And then there is Humanities 212. I hate my life when it comes to that class. We have to read a bunch of boring **** that ...

Getting settled

A lot has gone on since my last post and I'm going to go ahead and say I probably won't post every day because there just isn't enough time.

The day after the boat trip to Wahalla we started classes. Well actually just 2 of our 4 classes. For the first 2 weeks we are taking 5 days of German language and 2 of German culture, then the third week we add in our 2 other classes and cut German language ...

... was used (see pic). Beneath its northern end is the Historische Wurstküche, where Mozart and Goethe munched on the famous Regensburger sausages (see pic). The northern end of the bridge connects straight to the Old Town, where small streets and narrow alleyways host shops and cafes. At the eastern end is the Dom, St Peters Cathedral, (see pic), which is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Bavaria.

Another Parthenon to climb up?!

... down (a harder walk for me because it was at such an incline and I kept worrying I'd slip) to catch our boat back to Regensburg. The Danau is a very beautiful river, and watching the people boating, swimming, and kayaking in it was very entertaining.

After we returned, a group of us went to get gelato, then headed in separate directions to do our own thing, as most of us were still trying to get settled into our new home. I had a calm, uneventful night.

Very old Bridge and Historic Sausage Kitchen

... as tomorrow is Sunday and not many shops open.  We walked over the stone bridge which is over the Danube and 800 years old.  Still can’t believe all the history we hear, everything so old.  Went back to the ship for lunch and it was sausages, potato cakes and sourkraut as well as pork and a lot of other things. The meals are usually, especially lunch keeping in with whatever district we are in and today is Bavarian.  Regensburg is famous for a certain kind of sausage.  At the ...

Regensberg better than ever but time to move on.

... hostel isn't really busy enough to be fun. It seems to be rather informal in terms of knowing who stays and rely's on room key codes to control access. The kitchen is a fridge, microwave and kettle but there is a TV and about eight really comfortable chairs (this is a lot by youth hostel standards). Tonight I'm the only one in the room although I've seen another couple emerge from a room at the end. This is last unofficial hostel in Germany so its back to the institutions.

Werl to Regensburg, Germany

... wasn´t as peaceful as I expected from such a tranquil setting and I'd become used to double glazing again. The next day was cold. Mist had settled and didn't clear until midday. I had a tough climb up to Winterberg - a ski resort at 720m. I warmed up in a cafe served by a girl who thinks I'm a tramp and contemplated the cold night ahead. No thanks - I headed on to Hallenberg 15k of downhill bliss. Spotted a good place to camp with a picnic area just across the ...
