Gelvonėliai, Lithuania friederbi... were lining up their double mattress a few metres from shore, then running down the beach and leaping onto it, sometimes full body and sometimes trying to stand up and surf on it. In either case, they invariably ended up doing synchronised belly-flops into the lake, as the lilo shot sideways. We were crying with laughter at them.

So, Saskia made a sandcastle and we all had a swim in the lake. The Rockers slowly packed up their tents and dripping bedding and we got the little beach ...
Zarasai, Lithuania rachelkw... This bizarre turn of events meant we spent the evening down by the lakeside, in Virginia's completely empty summer house. They are doing it up, so the only things inside it are a few tools and some unused, newly bought appliances. The water and electricity worked, so we blew up out airbeds in the empty rooms and went for a walk round the lake with a gorgeous sunset.

That is serendipity.
Zarasai, Lithuania rachelkw... Sorry, we didn't get to take many photo's today.
Dave commented we could have been driving through Suffolk - it was so lovely. And, on we drove until we arrived at the small town of Rezekne. We soon spotted Hotel Rezekne in the middle of this modern European township and, unlike us, because it was getting pretty late, we checked in without even seeing the room. It was perfect. Lovely and clean, WiFi and a restaurant that was open downstairs for a late dinner.

Rezekne, Latvia nz2ukWe are still covering plenty of ground, drove through Poland to the Lithuanian border this morning, through the country to Latvia and up to Rezekne on the Russian border. First thing in the morning it is through the border (hopefully!) and across east to Moscow. Driven through some beautiful countryside, all rolling hills with forests and meadows. Sunshine for most of the day, dodged a few showers but mainly good. The only incident was Tim picking up a ...
Rezekne, Latvia ricka... people, the biggest in the Baltic Republics. Robert Schultz was waiting for us after we claimed our baggage. He presented Beverly with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. It was wonderful seeing him again! It is not hard to keep a conversation going with Robert. I passed along greetings from so many, starting alphabetically from the Allwines to everyone else. It's not hard for people to know who the ...
Smiltene, Latvia victorkubik... bus to Vilnius would stop, and that - it turned out - was right in front of the hotel. "And tickets?" "You can pay in the bus," he said. I thanked him, we wished each other all the best, and he went on out to enjoy the rest of his vacation. As for me, I stepped into a suddenly warm sun that was shining brightly from the clear sky, as it's always the case after the rain, and went to check the bus timetable. I realised I ...
Visaginas, Lithuania the_wayfarer... all the rest of us who were, let's say, less than fluent in that particular language soon divided our attention, devoting its ever increasing portion to other things. For the most of those present it meant food. With a few minor qualms at the beginning that, the way I saw it, were an initial nod to politeness, it all soon turned into a free-for-all where the name of the game was to grab as much as you can as soon as you can, for if you don't, or if you blink, someone ...

But buying a postcard is not much of a wisdom even if people don't speak the same language, and paying for it even less so. So our mission successfully accomplished, we turned back towards the hotel. Our concert might have been at six, but sound check was almost at hand. The rest of the band gradually started popping up, mostly after the breakfast hadn't been served and more, so if they ...

And not right away. "Two days before", rather. And for all that, it turned out we lived in luxury. The kind of rooms we were booked in was on the right side of the corridor. Left side of the hotel corridors accommodated the likes of Lithuanians, Latvians and so on. Those rooms had no bathrooms whatsoever, but rather shared a common shower ...
