... the interesting parts and the stories. So it was nice to go there but not mind blowing. I think we're all a little jaded from the barrage of cultural sights we've experienced in the last week or so. Probably the best thing was hearing from Lena about day to day life on Crete. How married couples are given houses by their parents, what age they marry, pregnancy out of wedlock is a precious baby and many Cretian brides walk down the aisle in their white dress ...

... windmills that pull water from the ground used in old times for irrigation, now mostly for tourism. We went to a small village life center with animals and examples of traditional crafts. For dinner we went to Maria's tavern, Blair quickly made friends with Maria, which was easy to do being the only people in the tavern for the entirety of our stay (two hours on a Saturday night). Took a taxi from the port to Thira, the nearest big city. Walked around, got a (overpriced) latte in a cafe on the cliff. Went to the Catholic church and Dominican monastery. Ho hum.

... loved it. We stayed there for several hours, walking about and seeing the sights. There were lots of people lining up at the banks while we were there too. Queues of locals getting out cash from ATMs while the banks were closed. Lots of shops were asking for cash only purchases too. Not sure how this whole Greek/European Union thing is going to pan out, but I feel very sorry for the people who live here.

July 1, 1:58 PM -- Nida Plateau, Crete

I tried to make it to the summit of Mount Ida, the highest point in Crete. I didn't make it.

Woke up early today, knowing the hike up Mt Ida is at least eight hours round trip, plus 1.5 hours getting to the base, plus 1.5 hours to Matala, my next planned stop. The drive was scenic but uneventful. I made it to the lone taverna that represents base camp (really it's the only building for ...
