      ... translated all the announcements for us. We finally boarded at 4.30 for our 1 hour flight to Cologne. Made a heavy landing in light snow and waited for 45 minutes for some extremely wet bags to finally arrive. Taxi to the reception place to collect the keys ( where the taxi left us two blocks from where we were supposed to be so a short walk in the rain found us the reception).       ... buses and boarded the Drachenfelsban (a tram) to go up the steep Dragon Mountain' to the Schloss Drachenburg to see its beautifully decorated rooms, exciting architecture with champagne, canapes and entertainment from a piano and violin duet.

      After returning it was all on-board for a disembarkation briefing and the Captain's Farewell Dinner before cruising overnight to Amsterdam.

      After the Cathedral Maire took us to a nice Croation restaurant on the river front where we all enjoyed a meal of traditional Croation food which was a first for us all. To have the opportunity to get that close to these photos is probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance, unless I manage to convince the Albert Kahn foundation to hire me. In some ways, life from 1914 is unrecognizable to us, but the chilling thing is, more often than not, we can recognize ourselves in it, and these photographs really help you to experience that. In this, the centenary of the start of WWI, it certainly gives you pause for thought.
